Heck, you can use water if you want. But why do you want to use any liquid? It is handy when you are doing some really serious grinding and want to wash off the particulates removed. However, the rods that the Sharpmaker uses are so fine, and the amount of steel being removed so little, that I don't think a liquid is necessary and just created an unnecessary mess.
Have you seen the Spyderco Wizard's/Founder/Owner's YouTube videos regarding sharpening? Very great stuff.
I like it how wd-40 keeps all the metal off my lansky stones when I use them freehand. I was wondering if it mattered in any negative way if I'd use oil with my spyderco bench stone also.
Sometimes adding some oil or other lubricant (water + dish soap, etc.) to the stone (ceramics, diamond and any others) can improve feedback and/or smooth out the whole process and stroke. I'd assume it also helps reduce loading up of swarf on these, as with other stones. Ceramics are known for loading up easily and losing aggressiveness when they do; so, anything to minimize it is always a plus. For me anyway, better feedback almost always makes for better results.
With my Spyderco ceramic stones, I use water and dish soap. Especially when I'm honing straight razors.
I think its not a messy as using WD40, plus I don't care for the smell.
