Can picture publication increase value?

I the last few months I have purchased a couple of Greg Lightfoot knives. One of these was a 458 Mag in stainless damascus. I got my May issue of Blade today, and I there is an article on Lightfoot. On page 41 is a 458 Mag SS Damascus. I got mine out and looked very closely, and it is obvious from the EXACT match of the damascus pattern, that it is the same knife. No doubt about it. My question..... can this add anything to the collector value?

Thanks,

BT

Not that I know of, but it would be cool to have a featured knife. Maybe if you find a Lightfoot collector, but I'm sure their aren't many of those since they aren't that hard to get a hold of.

A lot of the makers I have done photographs for have told me that they get calls as soon as the magazine comes out. Most of the calls want the knife in the shot. It never hurts to keep a copy of the magazine with the knife. If a maker gets the fame and fortune they deserve the value of their knives will go up and then you not only have the knife but also the article to show a buyer. I have a habit of calling a maker when my photo of his knife hits the magazine. So if you wonder if that is your exact knife just give the maker a call. I'm sure they will always be glad to talk to a person with one of their knives.

Thanks for the info. I have no doubt that the knife is the one in the shot. When I lay it out next to the picture, which shows the detail in the damascus very clearly, it is an exact match on the blade and bolster. There is no doubt. I originally purchased this one to carry, but decided against it after getting it. I wound up buying a 460 Spearpoint to carry. I plan to buy another bopy of Blade when it gets to the newsstands just to put back with the knife.

Thanks again,

BT

I'm jealous! That is just too cooool! How many times have you seen a picture of a knife and said "Man, I would love that knife!"?

As a dealer, we ALWAYS include magazines photos of the knives we sell if possible. We even display the knife with the laminated copy in the store. If the photo/article has to do with a "Best" show award it certainly increases the value, and makes the knife easier to move. Case in point: a Viet Nam era knife has a given value, with documentation and/or "in country" photos, certificates, etc., easily doubles the value.

Thanks for the info folks. I have been saving articles on other knives that I have examples of. I have a Roger Massey forged hunter that is picture in Blade from last years Blade Show, where it won (Best Hunter). It is not the same knife, but looks just like it except for the stag. This Lightfoot is the only thing I have that is "THE" knife in the picture. I am going to pick up another copy of the magazine to put back with it. Thanks again. BT

I don't know about pictures in magazines, but I do think value is increased when a classic knife is pictured in one of the well known books. I have a Scagel pictured in the Scagel book and a Cooper in the book about him. Both dealers who sold me the knives mentioned the pictures as selling points.

It may have more of an impact on value some years from now, than it does in the near future. It will sure as hell authenticate the knife. Damascus steel is like a finger print.
