Can rawhide be an acceptable alternative to kydex?

I've got a small neck knife I'm working on and I really don't want to do kydex for it, and veg tanned leather is expensive to get everything I need. I can get rawhide (cow) for free and was wondering if it can be sealed well enough to be an acceptable alternative to kydex for tip up carry of a neck knife? I would like to do a "kydex style" sheath with rivet holes for paracord options as I also make a belt loop from paracord for iwb carry on my hip. Is this a feasable concept?

Hello, rawhide will be on ok substitute to kydex/tanned leather as a neck knife sheath if you have a locking strap on said sheath,I doubt that you can get rawhide to have the hardness needed for retention because i think it'll be too dry and brittle,im not 100% sure but if you've ever compared kydex to leather you'll know what i mean, personally i have a kydex sheath for a neck knife and i think it'll last several lifetimes.
