Can rust migrate under scales?

I've got a Comp Grade Hell Razor that's a user for me; and I've dealt with the usual rust spotting on the surface with 3M pads - no problem. However, I noticed that some of the rust was immediately adjacent to the micarta slabs; and I was wondering:

1. Has anyone ever encountered rust migrating under the grips? Or are the grips applied with an epoxy as well as the hollow tubes, that effectively seals under there?

2. Without taking off the grips, can I apply oil or breakfree right on the edge of the micarta? Will that do any good, or will it not seep under? Will it do any kind of damage to the micarta?

Thanks, guys!

The scales are not epoxied on, they are simply press fit. Another user, Uncle J I believe, took the scales off his Comp sarsquatch, and there was rust under the scales.

Micarta is pretty stable. I don't see a rust proofing agent causing problems with it, it may be too tight of a fit to penetrate between the scales, but it should not hurt anything. It might not stop rust if there has already been some develop, but worth a try.

There can be rust forming under the scales and the scales are not epoxied. Thereis a thread about a rusty sarsquatch. You can google rusty sarsquatch to find it. Without taking the scales off and giving the whole blade a satin finish there isn't much you can do. It shouldn't affect the scales.

YEP there is rust under your scales!! But it is OK because I dont mind it so just send it to me and dont worry about it!

I had plenty of rust under the handles of my Busse. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=578846

I DON'T LIKE RUST ON A KNIFE, furthermore at 300, 500 700 bucks, or more.

That's the reason why I prefer a stripped Busse. The blade is nude but the handle still has its coating protection against the rust.

My opinion : epoxy is not a solution because sometimes it cracks. The coating is the best solution.
Is there an issue with rust under the coating? : the screws on the old Busse models permitted to inspect and to clean the steel under the scales.

A good knife has nothing to hide.
Busse are good knives: good design, good materials, superb steel, perfect heat treatment, wonderfull staff.
But with a better protection against the rust they would be better.

Rust can sure get under the scales. This happens to all fixed blades with exposed tangs. It is just the nature of the beast. A coating or nice smooth finish under the tang helps to keep rust to a minimum. Nevertheless, rust will still creep in there over time.

I have never seen another model of Busse rust like that under the scales. I think that the comp finishes are the only ones I have seen that are that prone to rust. Satin Infi is no where near as rust-able as the comp finishes (the decarb left on the finish is to blame, according to the Boss man). A good polish under the handles would get rid of the problem I think, but I don't have a drill press to do that. So I will have to either stick with satin finished, or coated and then stripped.

Even stripped infi, with all the dimples left on does not seem to rust like that.

My question, is when I strip my SS (my only coated one), will most of the coating stay on under the scales?

This is so true I'm afraid. When I modified my MudRazor I took the scales off to remove all of the coating. And underneath the coating where the handles used to be, the steel was effected by rust. Only superficial but it was there...
There was no rust under the coating at the blade section though. Maybe moist is trapped in there easier because of the scales:confused:

You can always strip it the hard way. Use just sandpaper...

Unfortunatly I didn't take any pictures of the MudRazor when I just finished stripping it.

But here's an old picture taken just after sanding the handles lightly. You can still see some tiny rustspots between the "M" and "R".

These spots were gone after the next passes of the sandpaper.

To be honest I was a bit surprised seeing the rustspots (under the coating, under the handles) but it never stopped me from buying more INFI:D:D

Nowadays I don't bother no more about the possibility of rust under the scales/coating cause I think it won't get through and through (not in this or the next lifetime anyway considering most of my INFI is of the FAT kind).

Thanks, guys! Looks like I might change out handle pins to removable rivets.

Uh huh.....

You know, I'm curious...has that line ever worked for anyone; or is it just so endlessly hilarious that it merits repeating as much as it is?
