Can some of you leather guys help me out?

This isn't a sheath question, but it is a leather question, so I decided to post here instead of gadgets and gear. I just received a couple belts from Orion Leather, and for the most part they seem really nice. One of the belts though, has a strange texture on the backside of it. About a foot or so of the back of the belt has a strange rough and "peeling" texture. Here's some photos.

Here's what most of the back of the belt looks like.

When I rub the rough patch, a bunch of "scales" and fuzz stand up. I contacted Orion and they said it shouldn't be an issue and that's just how the hide is. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Looks like they slicked or glassed the back with gum and then maybe put a finish over it. This provides the nice finish for the most part that you see in the first pic. What you're seeing in the second pic is that piece of leather in that area had quite a bit more nap on the rough out side. I'm not familar with Orion leather but would agree with them its nothing to worry about. Hides do get that way in certain areas. Just so you know that slicking or glassing is an extra step that many simply do not do.

Pretty belt. I wouldn't worry about it, it's normal. The majority of strength comes from the skin side. As long as the skin isn't cracked just wear it.

Thanks for the help guys, that puts me at ease. They are really nice belts. The other one I got was something called Hot Dipped, so when it bends, the wax/dye changes color. They're both really handsome belts, I expect they'll last a while.

Also called hot stuffed, and pull-up is the bendy color-changy attribute. :)

Love that stuff!
