...why Buck puts a knife on sale; but doesn't extend that price to the custom shop.

I know, I know - the sale price is on assembled knives without options; but it is frustrating to follow the link to the custom knife builder, only to see the price jump. If they aren't going to carry over the price, why leave the link?

Okay, I'm done whining.

I'm gonna say/guess its because Buck is a manufacturer mainly. while they do sell online and their factory store some stuff it's not their strength since they arent really a retail outlet primarily. a retail outfit like a dealer I'd expect them to get everything close to perfect as that's what they do. manufacturer I dont expect that, so much. course maybe they have a reason and a good one? I have no idear, as I dont work there.

Maybe they built for orders and had "overbuilt". So as opposed to shelving them [inventory sitting costs companies money], they put some on sale to recoup and please their customer base at the same time. Cost building in scale is much different than building one at a time.

Only other production knife company with a custom shop I can think of is Benchmade, and they charge full msrp on custom knives as well. I'm more surprised when I see a knife manufacturer sell directly to the consumer with a discount than without.

I don't really mind paying the asking price...the guys and gals in Idaho got to eat too.
And I've been blessed enough to spread it around.

Think of it as a contract obligation to their Big order manufacturing customers. If they decided to lower the price on the custom shop knives then take orders, now they are undercutting their large order customers (not smart business to anger them). The Buck business model is to manufacture large runs of the same knife and distribute those to the retail sellers. Doing small runs add's big $$$ to the cost of manufacturing, as well as shipping and handling costs on one off orders. Believe it or not even charging full MSRP at the custom shop they are not making money on those knives, so its just to make us Buck nuts happy!
