I just recently bought my first knife and want to learn how to sharpen it. Also the best way to take care of my knife.

Hello. Click and read the maintenence sub forum. That will give you a wealth of info. Welcome!

What sort of knife? Different materials require different care, and different blades may require different sharpening techniques.

Welcome to bladeforums, the best way to learn to sharpen is to gey something cheap, even a paring knife will do, and start sharpening on whatever system you intend to use, I find a simple Arkansas stone, available at Dicks for around $25ish, is enough. Keep it lightly oiled with WD-40 or 3in1 or something similar, on the pivot point for a folder and on the blade of any knife. Keep dirt and grime off the blade and out of any moving parts; and don't needlessly abuse the knife(As in whack it with a rock or any other such nonsense) it can cause the knife to break and can be dangerous. Don't let people who don't use knive borrow it, that's a sure way to get it broken. That's about all I can think of right now. You might want to check out the matinence and tinkering forum for everything you want to know and more about sharpening. Enjoy your new knife.
