Can someone explain how damascus gets its pattern to my dad and I?

I recall seeing or hearing that the pattern is etched, he thinks it's folds in the metal. How exactly is it?

TRUE Damascus steel, or "wootz" has patterns resulting from carbide banding in the blade, and the pattern is often enhanced by etching to make it more visible. However, the overwhelming majority of steel dubbed "Damascus" is mechanically produced, which is to say that it's folded layers of contrasting steel. The steel, again, is often etched to highlight the patterning, but the pattern in either case is not actually produced by etching. Some inexpensive imitations use etching to mimic actual pattern welded steel, though.
