It can be narrowed down to a wide date range due to a feature or two but a precise dating will be almost impossible with the corrosion. You're right about the model. There's many of them, but one looks exactly the same. Would be cool to know the year. Thanks.
Cleaned up the best I could. Old and beat to hell. Can't see any writing anywhere.![]()

Ah, there it is.This would be a Western black beauty F39 or a copy of it.
It may look similar but is most certainly not a Schrade 137.
The fact that theres a bunch of aluminum spacers, and how I can see the edge of the tang in one of the pictures tells me this.
I can also recognize the pommel as their style.
Nope, western cutlery made it themselves in Boulder Colorado.Ah, there it is.
I had the Schrade Walden 137 a long time ago, just wasn't recognizing the Western spacers on this one.
Style is so similar though. Same maker?
Yeah, some kid or hunter probably dropped it or sat it down. The pommel is not brass. It is aluminum. Also rather light. I don't expect it to be worth much. Was just interested as It was found on a mountain side. Who knows how long it sat there.

That's just the coolest. Makes you wonder how it got there, what it's been through. Was just interested as It was found on a mountain side. Who knows how long it sat there.
This looks nothing like the handle on mine. Mine is hollow.Yeah, some kid or hunter probably dropped it or sat it down.
If you can get the guard scrubbed up a bit with a toothbrush or some steel wool you just may find a model number stamped into the top of it.
It was only done from the late 60's to early 70's , but it may be there.
Here's what the black beauty handles look like
And here's where you might find a model number

The tang is forked, and the stacked handle spacers ( aluminum and some kind of black plastic for the black beauty line ) are H shaped if you will. This looks nothing like the handle on mine. Mine is hollow.
Was able to find model number where you said. Mine says F40.Yeah, some kid or hunter probably dropped it or sat it down.

Don't know if you realized this is a thread that's been dead for 3 yearsThis is a Western Cutlery F39 Black Beauty, the empty spaces would have had black spacers.
