I'm on a very tight budget and want something simple to cut with that isnt to delicate in case I have one of those oh crap what did it just hit moments. I'm not looking to cut zombies in half or defend against post apocalyptic hordes although it would be nice if I could trust it that much. I just want something simple to start out with might find out I like sabers or medieval swords or battle axes better.

And be safe? I don't know. Used would be cheap, but how safe is that? Have you thought about a wooden bokken? There's the CS Katana machete.
Just seems like $300 is about as low as it gets for a user.

Hanwei tactical katana/wakizashi. I have the tac wak and it's great. The kat isn't out yet, but it should cost under $150 when it comes out. It should do everything you want it to.

That is absolutely the closest you'll get. Go with that.

+1 I like mine except the top 4 inches of the blade keeps dulling because of contact with the fiberglass sheath.

Cold steel has a "two handed Katana machete". Isn't really a Katana but it may be what you are looking for and it is cheap. I think you could get it for about 25-35 dollars.

I personally paid about 300 for a Scrapizashi. I personally think it is a great value. Once again though it is not exactly a wakizashi, but close enough for me. I am just a huge fan of Scrap Yard Knives, great value.

The CS 2HKM kind of sucks at being a machete OR a sword. I recommend it for neither role.

I was hoping someone here would have info on the Musashi or Cheness or Mashiro brands or something like that that offer inexpensive katanas but I guess not. I've considered the Tac Katana and Wak but I wanted something alittle more traditional looking.

Musashi katanas are very good for their price. A good starter katana. I have 2 and enjoy them .

um, you could get a piece of tool steel bar stock for that price, probably with delivery included, but I personally wouldn't want to cut with a $100 sword unless I was wearing a lot of safety gear

ps I have seen $100 dollar swords fail just being shaken in the air

This. Musahshi, Chenness, Masahiro etc. have some quality issues.

Elaborate, please.....what do you do with them, and what is your level of training?

I have one long blade a Ninjato that I've owned for about 20 years. My mother bought it for me when I was ten. I used it for my martial arts class. It came sharp but I was very proud of it and hand sharpened it to a razors edge. We bought it at a military surplus store for about $75 back then. I have used it heavily the entire time I have had it. It has cut through 3 inch trees many times usually in one strike. The only thing that has happened is the Tsuba has became slightly loose. I would have thought that there would be as good or better blades by now for a similar or slightly higher price but I guess they don't make them like the used to.

That ninjato is MOST likely made of stainless steel, and someday, if you keep cutting trees, you will have a very nasty surprise, and hopefully don't hurt anyone else.

Youv'e been lucky, plain and simple.

I don't think there's anything out there for that price. Save up and buy a Scrapizashi or Rodent Waki. I have both and love them.

I've had my Rodent Waki for months now, it's awesome. Maybe it's not traditional, nor a full sword, but it's tough as nails, and fun. It really will chop wood, one handed, or two, and throw chips, delimb, and it is long enough to absorb the vibrations.
I highly recommend getting one, for safety and fun.
