Okay I have a nice hunk of Talonite and was gonna make a large Chinese style chopper/Bowie like blade with it. However, I was speaking with a friend the other day and he said that Talonite is a bit too soft to make a large blade. Because if you were to chop with it , the edge wouldn't hold up for long. Even though it would re sharpen very easily. Is this true ? He pointed out that most makers will make only smaller 4" and under blades with Talonite, because of this reason. Let me know guys, thanks so much for all the help in the past ......RDT

From what I heard Talonite is not a hard use material. For a large chopper/hard use blade you would be better served by 5160,1095,A2 or 3V to name a few. Good luck!:)

RDT,

I have a small Talonite folder that I got for an EDC. Bad news for me! My experience is that it is superb for cutting meat/leather and soft materials. It has a very "toothy edgy" type edge with micro serrations of little carbides in a soft metal binder ...or something like that. But for my use, cutting wire, opening boxes, chopping up an apple, scrapping off stickers and lables, etc....it wasn't a good choice. The edge is way too soft for what I needed it for.

My opinion is that it is a specialized material for specialized purposes in which it has outstanding performance....but it is too specialized for general purpose stuff.

Sincerely,
Rob

Thanks Rob, I kinda thought that was the case. From what I have read about it in the past. Guess I'll just break this piece I have down to smaller pieces and make smaller knives out of it. Hey...by the way, are you makeing that new platen for flat grinding with the rollers on it yet ? That looks sweet ! Take care.....RDT

Rich,

You mean one of these...?

It is the rotary platen. The "head" can be used on the KMG1, Bader BIII, and the older Bader BII. I also have a design for the Hardcore and BurrKing grinder.

I just haven't had time to put them one my web site. Anyone interested in rebuilding my web site?

Take care,
Rob

RDT,
Talonite will not make a good camp knife. The edge will roll too easy when chopping wood etc. It will make a good kitchen knife. Talonite is a specialized material for specific applications. I think it is the best cardboard cutter I have ever used.

Rob,
Tom really likes the grinder and rotary platen. I don't have a use for the rotary platen (yet) but I may have to buy one because it is so cool! Keep up the good work.

That rotary platen REALLY is cool. I'm probably going to be contacting you for a grinder in the next month or two, once we get in our house. I was replying to let you know that if you're serious about a new site, let me know. I'd be more than happy to help....however I'm am just a hobbiest not a professional.

Talk to you later.

Jared

Thanks Chuck !, and Rob....WOW ! I suspect you'll be receiving some $ from me in the very near future. WOW !.....RDT
