I just got a CRKT Sting and wanted to check on the legality of it, and here is what I found:

(2) He possesses any dagger, dangerous knife, dirk, razor, stiletto,
imitation pistol, or any other dangerous or deadly instrument or weapon
with intent to use the same unlawfully against another;

Is it okay to have if I dont intend to use it against another? How can they judge my intent unless I'm attacking some one with it? If I can provide a reason for having it, will that count as not intending to use it unlawfully? Is there any way to get them to re-make the laws more specificaly? Thanks guys.

Edit: I live in NY by the way, but not in NYC

Well I'm not an attorney but I would interpret that as a two part requirement. Both possession and unlawful intent. However, like many other states with vague knife laws, a LEO could probably bust you if he/she wanted to.

What's funny about laws like this is the use of phrases like, "dangerous knife" or "deadly instrument or weapon". What the heck is that? Pretty much all knives are dangerous. I could whittle away a point on a tree branch and make a dangerous implement out of it but is it legal to carry? What about a utility knife with a retractable blade? It's got a button on it. Still deadly if used for such a purpose. Oh these silly knife laws.

Look at NYSPL 265.15 #4....it will give you an answer that you may not like.....Possesion of certain listed knives = intent.....

If I read the exceptions to that correctly, if I voluntarily surrender the knife, I dont get in trouble for having it?

And they have an exception for my school, not knife related, but still cool.
"He knowingly has in his possession a rifle, shotgun or firearm in

school, college or university, except the forestry lands, wherever
located, owned and maintained by the State University of New York
college of environmental science and forestry, without the written
authorization of such educational institution;"
