Can this be done?

I have a CRKT First Strike knife. It's a tanto style blade, which would be a crappy knife for a camp style knife, but the blade is super thick at the spine and would otherwise make a great camp / bushcraft style knife. Can a Tanto blade be converted successfully to a clip style blade? If so, how?

My dad took his Rescue Blur which had no tip (like a wharncliff) we took it to a grinder and grinded it out to a modified spear point, but if he wanted he could have removed less metal at the curve (belly) and made it a clip point.

It can be, but it's most likely not worth the hassel, I would do it by:
-Taking off the secondary point with a file or a coarse benchstone.
-Go to a belt sander to redo the grind where the secondary point used to be(the edge would be too thick)
-Use the corners of the belt sander to grind the clip point

This may be a dumb question but why wouldn't a tanto style blade make a good camp knife?

A camp knife should be a multi-purpose knife. The angled edge is less useful than a belly for skinning or filleting.

My bad, i was picturing a curved bladed tanto in my mind where if you just knock off the secondary point you would have tons of belly depending on blade length, I guess i should have looked at the knife in question first, my apologies.

i now Tom Krein has made some spearpoints, clip points, drop points (what ever you wanna call it) from a tanto blade

It's easily done, If you don't want to try to re-profile it your self there is a few people here who will do it for a very reasonable price.

This MT Troodon used to be a tanto
