Can this piece of trash be fixed?

Hello,

I bought a replica of an M42 Infanteriemesser made presumably in India. I suspect India because a lot of historical replicas are made there and they always come soaked in the same stinky (probably cancerous) oil of some sort. Out of all the things I've bought in the recent past this is probably what has disappointed me the most.

It looks ok from this angle but it has a lot of defects. The blade is completely dull for starters and I'd have to sharpen it.

The handle was smeared with some brown substance. Wood stain hopefully? and look at the pins! What is this supposed to be? a Kindjal? cause that's the only blade I know to have raised pins on one side...

What the hell is this white residue inside the sheath? Reminds me of battery acid...

Look at this gap in the guard! Never received something like this. How does that guard even remain in place?

It does look nice with the rest of my "German" combat knife replicas...

Questions is:

This cost me 50 dollars and I don't think it's worth 50 dollars as it arrived. Do I try to return it/exchange it or do I bother trying to fix it? I can sharpen it or have it professionally sharpened. I can sand the pins to make them flush. How would I fill that gap in the guard? I suppose I could try to find a piece of mild steel, shove it in the gap and then grind it until even with the rest...

Any recommendations?

I suggest you keep it unless you will actually recoup all of your money including shipping.
It looks like an interesting pattern and I immediately thought it might be fun for me to make one. I'll see if I have a chunk of 3V in the garage. Funnily enough as I search for additional examples, the ones I'm seeing also have the protruding pins on one side.

I did a google search for "M42 Infanteriemesser". Most of the pics I saw had protruding pins and a looked a little "rustic" in nature. I know the Germans are known for precision engineering and work but during the later ends of WW2 when materials were a problem, maybe this is what they produced to keep up with demand.

I would dig a little further into other reproductions unless there is a return window to compete against.

All the repros I see in a brief search look similar, raised pins and long guard, while the originals have neither? Options:
Find a better repro and return this, or
Return this and keep searching in hopes of finding better but you might not, or
Keep and repair this
