Can this stiff action be remedied?

I've just received a beautiful Benchmade Hunt Small Summit Lake, which is a backlock model. It's obviously well made and is a pleasure to handle.

I do have one problem, though: the action is quite stiff to open and often catches on closing, such that I have to press and re-press the backlock. Otherwise, everything seems perfect.

Is this a problem which can likely be remedied with a good lubricant (I have some Eezox synthetic lube for knives), or should I return the knife for a refund? I'd really like to keep it, not only because it's so good-looking, but also because it's a numbered version -- no. 8 of first production run of 450.

I don't want to apply the lube if I'm not sure it's going to work, as I figure that would prevent my being able to return it in new condition.

I have a several Spydercos in about this same price range, all of which open and close like butter. This is my first Benchmade.

Thanks.

It sounds like the back spring is a little strong. Happens sometimes. Best way to wear it in if you want want to just press it a lot is to open the knife up partially (ideally where the lock bar is out the most) and leave it for a few days. If that doesn't help, I got nothing.

O.K., thanks, dkb45. I've got it sitting open, as you described. I also sent a message to Benchmade's customer service. I'll post their reply here.

I appreciate your help.

I don't know what knife dealer wouldn't let you return a knife that has been lubed. But I'd say apply the lube, see if it helps, then return it if it doesn't.
