Can we buy an unsharpened RAT?

Buddy of mine over on INGunOwners was wanting to see if he could grind down an RC-5 to fit in an RC-4 sheath and us it as a trainer.

I got to wondering if it would be possible to buy an unsharpened RAT instead.

He's going to EDC at RC-4 and I carry an Izula, thought maybe we'd ask if there are possibilities of getting a dull knife to practice with?

Figure if any company in the world might take defects and sell them as trainers it would be RAT.

Whatcha think?

I'd rather use the hell out of it for a month (the way RAT knives were meant to be) and then file it down ~;-)

why not talk to a local metal shop and have them blank you something out of mild steel, or stop at Lowes/Home despot/Menards and but a bar of 3/16" flat stock and grind your own?

The OP was asking because a someone we know wants a trainer to go along with an RC-4 as an EDC blade.

I don't want to hack up a new RAT, that's blasphemy.

Just wondering if they'd be interested in moving something that didn't make the cut so we could use them as trainers.

Typically, way back when I was training regularly, we would make our own out of 1/4" or even 1/2" thick aluminum stock.

I personally wouldn't want a trainer in thin stock like what comes from the factory. You were to fall on it, even non-sharpened and rounded, you could end up in a world of hurt.

Isn't that why many trainer that companies sell are made of rubber. I am not sure that I would really want a metal training. As stated -- you could still be accidentally stabbed with a completely "unsharpened" metal knife or blank. I am not trying to be argumentative -- just my .02 worth on a subject that I know very little about.

Yea, I personally never liked the rubber trainers. You lose alot of "feel" with them.

I've landed hard on some 1/4" thick trainers in the past, had some wicked bruises from them but never a puncture. Go any thinner and I'd be nervous.

Yup. Go with thick aluminum or you'll be a right sorry mess! :o

I've been wondering the same thing. I carry an RC-3 and would love a trainer.

Guys, another option would be to cut and grind it out of G10 at the thickness of the handle. Make it about 1/2 - 3/4 inch G10 and you can really radius the corners nicely, you'll have a trainer which will be the same weight as the knife, more or less, and you'll also have a trainer with "safe" edges.

The trainer I favor is a Mad Dog Frequent Flyer without an edge or point - NO grind at all, only the outline of the knife. It makes an excellent training blade. A RAT RC3 like this would be really great.

I was just passin along the question for a buddy on another forum.

Figured I would come to the pro's first :D
