Can we do the Becker Necker again?

I finally got a chance to handle one today and my worries about the cutout on the butt were justified. The bottle opener cuts into my palm. Can we get a version with a smooth handle all around

I know I could cordwrap it or put handle slabs on or weld some plug in place -- forget it. I want the real thing, but without the extraneous hook back there.

How are you holding it? I have pretty big hands, which do come off the end of the handle, but I'm having to push down on the blade with my left hand while forcing my right palm inward to make it touch the notch back there. I'm just wondering if a different grip might help. I doubt, since these just came out, that a new version would be released any time soon.

I wouldn't even suggest a new version. Maybe if I ran into Ethan Becker at a knife show ... :)

With my index finger in the choil and the butt resting against the heel of my hand, when I push forward, I can feel the notch. This is a standard grip I use on many knives and I am not going to change it. I buy knives that suit me, I don't suit myself to the knives.

Okay, now I'm

;) :D

Yep, I know what you mean about not suiting yourself to the knife, I just meant that the shop's up and running with the bottle opener/wire breaker, and I doubt they'll change it anytime soon. I wonder if you could do some careful rounding of the inner edges to make it more comfortable. Of course, then you'd have to figure out a way to replace the finish. At least, cheap as they are, experimentation can be done fairly painlessly.
I'd still like to see a picture of one with some nice scales. I'd be willing to do that to a second one, just as a neat little hunting knife.

I think it's a great little knife, and would probably do fine with aftermarket scales. It just wouldn't be quite the knife I wanted. Asking for a new version is premature, but if they do it, I'll buy it.

Hey Esav Binyamin...

I am sorry to hear that your hand does not fit the BK 11 handle very well...Although I had some initial concerns regarding possible comfort concerns in the bottle opener area I had a lot of trouble making it un comfortable in my own hand AND, the people I had try the knife also had no problems.... SOooooo...I figured it was gonna be all OK... I may have a fix so please check your email.......

All Best

Ethan,

This may seem like a naive question, but according to the Camillus website, the deep part of the notch is used as a wire breaker. How do you use it as such? Thanks for following Bladeforums and keep up the good work.

Richard

A wider choil and an inch more of non-grooved handle. Wouldn't hurt to have a deeper choil as well. The same blade with a real handle with a little more length to the handle would be a great knife too.

Hey Richard....

A wire breaker is used by simply trapping the wire in the slot and twisting the breaker back and forth until the wire breaks from fatigue...it is crude but effective.

To start, it helps to stabilise thinner wire with your thumb so that you are bending it back and forth at the same spot.... We sized the slot so that it would work on most fence wire and of course the ubiquitous snare wire that all right thinking people never, ever leave home without (I like to think of it as a sort of woodsy Diners Club card).

Hope the above helps.

All Best

Mr. Becker - If one can be "fixed", can two? If so, I would be interested as well...

Just a guess at it but could you just not fill the gap with jbweld, then wrap around it if wrap it preferred? You are just trying to fill in a spot, it is not a "load bearing" place.

I don't know what jbweld is, but I don't want a wrapped handle. The knife has a very well-designed handle as is, except for the really minor annoyance of a light jab in the heel of my hand in one grip.

The necker is a great little knife.
In my opinion, the most outstanding feature is the bottle opener.
Well, at least it is around camp..... :)

Ethan put one of these in my hand at Blade... I thinks its probably one of the most usefull neck knives I've ever seen... I dig it!!!

I love mine, or I did rather. I let someone use at work, and now its in horribly dull, and I'm having quite the time trying to resharpen it. Its working, but its a pain in the ass. the last 1/4 of an inch looks like an edge on an ax. the bottle opener has never bothered me, and the short time I had it before it dulled up to being usless...it worked very well.

Off again, to finish it.....I hope.

Esav,
JBWeld is an epoxy-like material found at hardware stores and WalMart and Krogers and Walgreens, etc. It works wonders for filling in annoying angular bits. Some makers even use it to attach buttcaps, guards, and grips.

Hope that helps.
