So my new to me Inkosi was supposed to get here today, but our mailman was nice enough to not even get out of the truck and just left a "you weren't home card" in my mailbox....Alas I have to wait until tomorrow before I have it. In the meantime I tried a forum search but couldn't find anything. I know CRK is big on allowing us to maintain our own CRKs, how are they about mods? I'm just talking basic stuff like anodizing and engraving on the presentation side, nothing that would compromise lock integrity.

I can't speak for electrical anodizing, but heat anodizing will void your warranty. Maybe someone else here knows about electrical anodizing. Engraving by anyone other than CRK voids the warranty.

That's not what they told me at Bladeshow. I showed them my engraved Sebenza and they said they would likely just decline to BB the scales (not that you'd want them to) but everything else was still covered.

I think the people at CRK are humans, not robots. I am sure the situation would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If your detent ball fell out, and you had "In memory of my dead Grandma" engraved on the presentation side, I don't think Anne would phone you up to tell you to get stuffed. The only thing that changes, is by modifying the knife, you open an opportunity for refusal if there is a disagreement between you and CRK over a warranty claim.

This is a good point LW, as I had forgotten about anodizing with heat since it's so easy to do with electricity. Would totally make sense as you risk altering the knife.

And yeah I'm talking about electrical anodizing and presentation side engraving then something silly happens like I pinch a washer being a tard or some detent ball issue which was mentioned. Only two things I can imagine having to send one in for other then a complete catastrophic failure of some sort which I wouldn't expect.

What I was told on the phone very recently was that they'd still service something like that, but may not to it under warranty. Someone here recently had to pay for his service, I think it was around $30.

Oh cool. Either way it's cool. Worth it imho. ;-)

You have to pay to replace pinched washers anyway. I've had a couple like that myself.

Good info here Lady and Gents. Ty much.

I can see it now every time I maintenance the knife, "Self," That's what I call myself. "Self, don't pinch the washers don't pinch the washers DON'T PINCH THE WASHERS!!!!"

I think we ALL say that! :D :D

I would think that if you sent one in with a modification that is reasonable, then you may be charged for services rendered, where as the same services performed may not be applicable if the knife is not altered in any way. They may refuse to work on one that is heavily modified.

I like to think of "warranty" and "service" as two different things.

Your warranty could be blown, but they would still service the knife. Servicing as far as sharpening, replacing washers, thumb studs, lanyards, pins, screws, etc... Warranty as in, there is a lock bar issue or maybe the blade cracks around the thumb stud... you are S.O.L. on stuff like that.

I just sent a Sebenza 25 that was "nuked" in for spa service and they sharpened and tuned it no problems at all. Charged me for washers, sharpened for free. My washers were pinched though, so would have charged no matter what. Got it back on this past Friday. No worries. "Nuked" is electro-anodizing and stone washing. The stone washing I thought would have been the deal breaker as that actually puts tiny little scratches into the titanium, but they took care of me.

Electro-anodizing under normal circumstances does not hurt the titanium, and something done this way can be undone easily, all without hurting your titanium. I think the important part is to make sure the person you have do the work is reputable and not an idiot who will just let the scale sit in the acid too long because that will ruin your titanium scale. I have a Large 21 right now that is kind of blurple, but I could restore it back to factory if I wanted to with stripping the ano and bead blasting the scales.

I have one knife, a modded Mayo Sebenza that they are not very fond of and I would not even send it in for service. It has holes drilled through it by Tom Mayo, which eh, you either love it or hate it.. its ok. Not for everyone. I'm kinda on the fence about them, but it was more of just wanting one of the rare Sebenza mods by a legend. The other would be the Vallotton mods, but those are even rarer.

Tim Reeve kinda mentioned recently some changes are coming. I think they are starting to take a stronger stance against mods. Just my thinking. Only way to find out though is just going to be waiting until they make their announcement.

But as of now, they took care of my nuked 25 and I can't say enough about this company. They really take good care of us and their knives.

just out of curiousity how much were the washers?

I'm curious as well. I hear about so many people talking about paying for replacement parts, but isn't it just a nominal charge of a couple dollars? If so, that's not a huge deal, especially when most manufacturers tell you there is nothing they can do to help you if you damage a small part or strip a screw head.

Washers are listed on my price sheet(not real new) as $1.50-with a note that they do not send them out, so the knife will have to be sent in.

I believe Kidcongo is correct, that they determine how to handle these modded knives case by case. They aren't looking for an out on the warranty, just trying to be reasonable to both sides and not take on responsibility for others work(also some mods may interfere with the way they do the work, such as rounding the edges of the scales). They are good people and will help as best they can.
