Hey guys, first post in here (I think) but I lurk...

Anyway, can you date the large SAK in the pic? I'm thinking around '91 from the riveted scissor, but I don't really know. The main blade says rostfrei stainless too if that helps. Also, is the awl/scissor combo an indicator of age?

Obviously I'm out of my element here...

Thanks!

Hey, Strigamort, nice to see you around :)
Sorry, I don't know much about SAKs, all I could find is that the 4 line tang stamp (Victorinox Switzerland Stainless Rostfrei) is typical of pre-2005...I know, big help, right? :D

Haha good to see you too bud. ;)

I'm betting that there is a wealth of whittling knife knowledge in here that hasn't found its way to our little carving knife thread. Figured I should start spending more time over here to get the skinny from the pros, but to be honest I'm a bit nervous about picking up another slipjoint. I can already see selling off the tacticals to finance all the GECs that I reaaaally want. :D

Glad to help. I love the Climber, and related Super Tinker (it has a phillips instead of the cork screw). These 3 layer SAKs are a good combo of size vs. utility.

Uh-oh - sounds like someone may be coming down with a case of the Traditionals bug. It's a slippery slope, indeed. At least you'll be in good company here :)

I guess I could date it... Have to find out where it likes to eat... and my wife might get jealous.......

Sorry, it's late/early. ;) :D

I think you're right there. The sewing hole in the awl means it's post 1985 and the scissors with the screw dates it pre 1992. I'm not 100% sure but I think the non-fluted corkscrew puts it as post 1991. As I'm not an expert, but if it's 1991-1992 that's pretty accurate dating for a swiss army knife, as they sometimes went for years without changing anything.

Thanks! I mentioned it in another thread but the knife was thrown in on a trade. The guy had bought several SAKs from a box of them at one of those TSA sales. It's kind of sad to me that someone had the knife for that long and surrendered it at the airport, but I'll give it a good life. :)
