+1 for a cheapo. I like to buy a SAK when I arrive, and check it back. I usually don't like to check a bag on the way there. Knives, as long as they are legal in both localities, are not prohibited in checked luggage, although I have heard of theft from TSA workers.
I clearly mark them in a see through plastic container, and have an itemized list of them on the container and on a name and address card kept inside on top of my clothes. I have had some mysteriously disappear, but i think the list for some reason magically helps keep them in place.I lock the container with a TSA approved lock as well.
Never had any trouble with my knives in checked luggage. Although the undercover guy at disney didn't like the kershaw clipped in my pocket. But i got a cool souvenir most people don't get from disney. The bag they put my consficated knife in. I got it back as soon as i left the park. Good thing i was wearing my 1st Trip to disney pin.
checked baggage, cheapo knives, no problem, i even got the note from tsa that they went through my checked luggage one trip and i had about eight or ten knives including a mora sheath knife, no problems.
I've had a couple of knives taken from my checked luggage, both Spydercos that could only have been found by a person with an X-Ray machine. This tells me it was not the baggage handlers. I have also noticed that you are no longer allowed to use TSA locks on your gun case when carrying a gun in checked baggage, you must use your own lock. This tells me that TSA does not trust its people with the keys to your gun case.
