I have been using a Gatco sharpening system for years ,the one where you clamp onto the knives and it has slot for different anges. My problem since finding this forum is that I can only get sharp enough to barely shave hair. It seems thats what seems to be a mark if your knife is sharp. My brand new Bk 7 shaves hair like a razor.

How do I get my knives like that? I did a search and all I found for sharpening is the Spyderco Sharpmaker . Does it have guides to keep the angles perfect too?

Hi,

Read, read, and read - you can do searches on the Forums and find a wealth of material.

Then,

Practice, practice, practice.

You can get a knife to shave very smoothly at 25 degrees. This is only a few degrees off from the norm of about 22 degrees. The Sharpmaker has rods set at 22 and 15 degrees so you just eyeball the knife vertical, which isn't difficult, and it allows a constant angle from one honing pass to another. It will produce a very sharp shaving edge.

You will find some good info here: http://www.bladeforums.com/features/faqsharp.shtml

The Spyderco 204 sharpmaker is a ceramic rod system that is pre-set for 30 or 40 degrees. It is a great set that comes with a video and will sharpen knives, scissors, drill bits, chisels, you name it. It would be an excellent partner for your Gatco. good luck and if you need more help, just post!

Duh ,I forgot to look in the FAQ. The Magician that is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks
