I have a DMT course/fine sharpener and its great but im wondering if i need something a little finer for finishing touches. If i carried a piece of stroping leather, would that be too big of a jump? From the DMT fine to leather? Im trying to conserve on weight but if a finer stone is better ill carry that instead. Id rather not spend the money on the extra fine dmt

alot of us do it all the time its one of the best edges for pocket knives, nice and toothy, yet refined enough to shave arm hair.

the key is to pop the burr on diamond stone then weaken it and reduce it on the stone as well with alternating passes.

then

finish off the edge on the strop

Boom

nice and sharp if properly executed.

keep in mind that the leather works much better with the right compound.

also if you want a better push cutting edge you will need to finish the edge at a higher grit stone.

but honestly its not need for a pocket knife unless you have either a very specific use in mind or just enjoy the hobby and sport of it.

DMT 'Fine' is 600 mesh / 25 micron which I've found to be more than sufficient for EDC.

Even a few light passes over a denim pant leg would be 'strop' enough.

try a loaded strop after a DMT Coarse 325 or equivalent for a toothy, and super sharp edge that performs very well

Awesome! Thanks guys. So Hero, what you're saying is do 5-10 passes each side- whatever is needed, then 1 each side alternating to break off the burr? I could go to the strop from there then, right?

Thanks for the help

its just doing one side until you get a burr, repeat, then alternate sides each pass with light pressure to reduce the burr then finish on the strop.

there's a ton of little details but really that's all there is to it and the rest is just practice :D

DMT Coarse (blue) 325 mesh --> DMT Fine (red) 600 mesh --> leather strop loaded with some type of compound is a recipe for some great, slightly toothy edges. You can stop right there and have great results.

If you wanted to step it up a notch, add the DMT EF (green) 1200 mesh, and make that strop out of piece of 12" x 3" x 2" balsa wood with some 3 micron or 1 micron diamond paste directly on the wood, and you'll see even more improvement on the final edge.
