Hey guys, I generally don't hang out in the Busse/Swamp forums because I didn't own any and they weren't really my style of knives. But I had seen pics of the Swamp Rat SAR around and had always liked the looks of it. I was recently able to trade for one and I wanted to know the history of the knife, i can't seem to find much info on them. I have attached a pic of mine, i really like the overall desert look of it. It's definitely a little beast of a knife! And I'm currently having a leather sheath made for it. ANyway, thanks for any help.

Yep. That's it. SR101 steel, through-hardened. This means it's not as bendy as something like INFI but how much can you really bend a smaller EDC knife?

The nice thing about SR101 is it's edge-handling ability. Combine that with the fatness of the SAR and you have a good package.

Here is some info on the model:

I'm not a fan only b/c of the handle. It just didn't feel right to me. But it is a top-notch knife.

Man, that handle style is my all time EDC favorite. I have a SAR and it is a beast of a knife. Also have a Rat Hunter which is my favorite SW blade, and a Desert Jack on it's wy to me that also have the same handle.

I've wanted that knife for a long time, congrats! It's a 1/4" thick, so it'll take a beating. SR-101 is known to hold a really great edge so thin it down to make a nice slicer that you can still abuse.

If you go to ratknives.comand do a search in the forums, we had a couple good threads going on it last year.

I bought one off Vox, but struggled with it a bit. I loved the handle...totally...and still want a blade with that handle...the rat hunter or dog skinner...but the 1/4" was tough for me...I felt like my Howling Rat did more so I let it go in a trade...That said, lots of people love them and they are tough to find.

I had one a while back and loved the handle, and the overall design. If they'd made it out of 3/16" steel, I'd still have one. The thickness was just overkill for anything I need from a knife that size. Stout, though. If I was limited to a knife that length, I'd have put mine to plenty of use.

I have only one handle like that one. It rides in my deer pack. Safari Skinner D2. Great knife.

Nice score!

Still one of my favorites. For a 1/4" thick, 4 1/2" bladed knife, it's well designed. The distal taper starts early, and goes to a very useable tip that is thinner than many 1/4"-stock knives. And, as already mentioned, the edge can be helped out with a bit of thinning for better slicing action.

The SAR is THICK for its size but that is in line with its intended use of Search and Rescue (and cutting into an occasional tank :D). The handle is fantastic. The blade is stout and tough and indestructible.

If you are looking for a THICK smallish knife this one will suit you well. If you are looking for a lighter midsized slicer then you will probably move the Swamp SAR to another home.

Another thought... if you like that basic size but want a thinner blade then you should look at the awesome Dog Skinner (similar to the Bog Dob but in micarta with the same basic handle shape of the SAR) or the new Scrapper 5 that is being released at Scrap Yard right now.

Definitely, this exact knife in 3/16" would be perfect. All of my knives in this size are 3/16" and under. This will be a nice little tank though and it feels great in hand.
