So last night I put a file in the fire to anneal it and today I took it out to find that it was bent :grumpy: I had the idea to bend it back using a blow torch and either a vice or an anvil and another heavy weight. Any help would be great.

If it did anneal it should be easy to bend without heat. Lay it on an anvil with something under one end and hit it a few times to straighten or use the vice to bend it back. I tried the wood stove anneal and got a few bent and warped planer blades. I tossed them in the recycle and started over. I think it is better to pull them out and cool in the ashes than leave them in the fire a long time.

First thing to learn before you can make knives; Is how to straighten a piece of steel...

It ain't hard!

Working cold steel on an anvil is bad practice.

Put a board on top of the anvil to protect the anvil face.

I always use a 3 point set up on my vise to straighten blades. 2 3/8" bolts on one vise face, and 1 on the other. Looking down it looks like this.

____o____ Well, you get the idea. I just clamp down on the vise till it bows in the other direction and a little past. Annealed steel should not take very much pressure to fix.
