Picked this up awhile ago. I don't recognize the marking. The poll is interesting as it has a ridge down the length of it in the middle. Does anyone have any ideas?
 
BME?... i don't know I cant read old stuff... the Ridge possibly from drop forging? Or it's a punch pressed bit?
 
As I was staring at it, it occurred to me that I was reading something upside down. After rotating it, I think is says, "USA 3 1/2." Does that make sense to anyone else? Doe it give anyone a clue about where this axe might have originated?
 
Sure does look like 3 1/2 when you do that. Does the actual weight jive with this? As to the 3 letters above the only one I can discern is an S.
