C = .76%
Si = .27%
V = .13%
Cr = .84%
Mn = .60%
Fe = 97.32%

Any idea what this steel is. I don't know but I would like to.

Thanks,

John

Well it's not L6, there's no nickel listed. Maybe one of the silicon shock steels? S5 or S7? Unfortunatly I'm at work and don't have any of my reference books with me.

I figger it's probably the melted down sum total from a '67 Chevy Chevelle SS and all it's associated parts. Hey, I used to have one. I should know :D

John,

Assuming that this is not a red-herring, I believe what you might have is tool, steel similar to L6, made during the Ni shortages of World War II. This would have been when Manganese was first substituted for Ni.

How old is this piece, and where did you get such a precise analysis? It is those odd numbers which make me think this is not a straight question.

I disagree Max. It had to be a Malibu. Too much chrome for a Chevelle SS...

John,
Not trying to be a smarta$$ or anything but:
How can you have a steel analysis without knowing what type steel you have?
Is there a salvage steel from an application that will help all of us makers?

Sorry. I wasn't trying to fool anyone. This steel is from the test blad that my teacher, JD Smith, used to pass his ABS journeyman's test way back when. He had received it from a friend who only told him it was "die cutter steel" or something like that. Well the knife performed great so I wanted to know what steel it was. I sent it out for content analysis and that is what I posted to the list. I don't know what type of steel it is either.

Any more ideas.

John

Die Cutter steel is typically D2........
but it has way more than 1% Carbon content.......as that is the definition of high carbon tool steel. That is what the "D" stands for.
