It appears to be a 1700's British short saber hanger except it has this brass thumb piece. Any idea of what model and country this sword is ? Apparently no blade or grip markings.

18th century grenadiers in line regiments of foot were issued with short hangers with either a straight backsword or curved saber blade. Germans, like the Hessians in the American Revolution, preferred thumb rings.

Finally received the sword in the mail. There was a scribing on the guard but it is very worn. Looks like it starts with the letter "L" Would this have been a makers mark or unit number or owner's name ????

Those marks are definitely NOT a makers mark which would be a geometric shape or symbol or a picture (running wolf) or even an actual stamped word or name or initials. The scratched marks look to me like a "JC" and above them a loop. The scratches joining to that loop might form a "4P" so maybe fourth platoon. My guess is the grenadier scratched his initials and unit onto the shell guard to identify his hanger (which he may have personally sharpened or liked the balance of) so he could retrieve it from a pile of others in barracks or when arms were stacked in camp.
