Can you imagine a RC3 as thick as a RC5?

Just got back from training with a buddy of mine. I had brought along my RC3 and RC5 to showcase. My buddy loved the size of the RC3 and the thickness of the RC5. Could you imagine if RAT made like a RC3 "HD" with the same thickness of the RC5!!!! Talk about having enough knife to EDC! That was my buddies observation. Here in CT we cant carry any fixed blade knife with a blade longer "cutting surface" of 4 inches. Are me and my buddy the only ones or would any of you guys like to see this combination as well?

I wouldn't like it, but to each his own. The 3's the best slicer of the bunch and making it twice as thick would only compromise that.

It is tough enough as it is. No need to change what is already a proven blade. At least, not IMO.

yea... sounds like a busse.... it would defiantly mess up the slicing and weight of the 3... i like my 3 shes a good little slicer and just right to pack around all day

A RC3 with a 1/4" thick blade with an almost full height flat grind but leave an 1/8" of flat at the top. That would be sweet for just in case you have to pry with it and it should still slice well. What about the "HDRC3" only has a pointed pommel no round option and has a bit of a palm swell on the scales and has some cutouts in the tang and hollows in the scales to make it lighter and to give a hideout spot like the HEST.I would buy one and I have 2 RC3s.

Not for me. You might want to check out Horton Knives, he has his own sub-forum here and specializes in THICK. There are also Busses that are really thick, but Jerry seems to have come to his senses and many of his blades are 3/16" thick now and his small blades are a respectable 1/8" thick.

This is a kind of an interesting one by Christof (Knives by Koyote) who is a pretty classy custom maker.

For that kind of thickness in a shorter than 4 inches blade.
One solution: the HEST.

I don't think there will ever be a 1/4 inch RC3/4. That said, I could also be wrong. I just think that it is very unnecessary.

Yeah as far as I heard, Jeff and Mike still hold to that that traditional belief that knives are supposed to cut stuff. As long as they stick to that we probably won't see any more blades in 1/4" ;)

I can baton successfully with 2mm stock knives. There's absolutely no need for 1/4" thickness on a small knife. Even my larger choppers aren't that thick.
Thin knives cut better. Small knives cut, large knives chop. Small knife should therefore have thin stock.

I think the sharpened prybar era may be ending. At least I hope so. The RC-3 is just fine as it is. If you want a thicker one, get the HEST or RC-4. Even my latest 10" blade Busse is only 3/16" thick. A 1/4" thick RC-3 is a waste of steel, IMO.

Thicker blades seem to just be a way for a manufacturer to feel more comfortable selling knives with an unconditional warranty on them. Great big fattys with a full flat grind to keep them functional.
Don't get me wrong. I own several like that and eventually culled the blades that didn't perform to my standards. A few of them are my preferred knives for certain tasks where the smaller and thinner blades are the ones that rank as EDCs.
Busse makes great blades but there is a small percentage of them that I would consider to be novelty knives. RAT on the other hand offers warranty and no gimmicks. Old school at it's best. Why change a perfect EDC into a sharpened railroad spike?
I could see something the size of the Junglas being 1/4" near the scales but not an RC3.

No Thanks. RC-3=probably my favorite fixed blade knife. .25 RC-3=a waste of good steel. Why do you need a .25" knife anyway? Particularly in that size.

+1?

When I first got into knives I was all about getting the thickest monster out there - now with more experience under my belt, I really value the thinner blades - they are more useful and can really handle pretty much anything you could ever throw at it.

Gimme skinny any day.

My RC-3mil is my FAVORITE sub 4" knife, and one of my favorite knives altogether, mainly because of its thickness...
