Can you (or a knife craftsman) improve the lockup on a production lockback?

I figure the answer is "no" but that it doesn't hurt to ask the more knowledgeable.

What exactly do you mean by lockup? Like how strong the back lock on a particular knife is? Or how far the lock engages the blade? How well everything fits together? Something else?

I'm personally not sure exactly what you're looking for and a bit of clarification will probably get you a better answer. Most things can be improved to some extent. But how much and at what cost depends on what you're looking for.

we need more info, what kind of lock, make and model?

Maybe. As a rule parts are made in a one size fits most scenario with varying tolerances. As a rule that will get caught during production but in some cases a good customizer can refine a production knife.

And yes more details. On some knives this would be worth spending the money on it; on other less expensive ones not so much.

The answer is yes. A professional can usually improve things like this.
