Can you pry with the Tac VT?

hi all
This may sound like a dumb question, but I just wanted to know what kind of prying / levering abuse the Tac VT can take - for example, instead of bashing a Masterlock padlock, using the spike to lever off the hinge for example.

I'm guessing that you can put a lot of torque on the head, but just wondering "how much" is too much... anyone managed to destroy / severely test their Tac VT yet?

Thanks in advance,

I'm not on a crusade to test or break my VN Tac as I am not rich so I haven't haven't tried anything sickening like breaking a padlock which I can't imagine anyone but a criminal needing to do... but with the new stronger handle/head marriage this thing can take more than any other hawk I know of except the NG Ranger and maybe an ET.

I've beat the shtuff out of this thing and pried some tough things with ease... haven't exactly tried to break a padlock  I haven't yet figured out why anyone would want to unless they wanted to break in somewhere. Use a gun on it! :D From what I've experienced, I would say it could break a simple padlock... but you didn't give the SIZE of padlock you want to break! there are 2" thick ones ya know! I have pried huge thick staples from trees, put my full weight on the head/handle marriage by climbing and hanging from a tree with it... thrown the shtuff out of it and some other things. Head is secure as ever.

As far as I'm concerned, the VN Tac can take anything you can throw at it... or anything I have or ever will.

My suggestion to all the padlock nuts is to buy a crowbar. They are cheep and involve no re-sharpening. Some on these padlocks are mean to stop a bullet! Why don’t you all just buy Light-Sabers or something? I think I know a Jedi that could get you one, but they don’t come with as good of a guarantee as the Hawks from ATC do.
:D

You guys are too funny!

We haven't done what we call a "pull test" on the VT Tac, which is a machine based pressure test that tears the handle out of the head.

The handle/head juncture on the VT Tac is pretty robust...not as much as our Next Gen, but indeed strong. We have not had one break from anything but throwing...which is GROSS and sharp application of force on impact...more than any chop or levering action could produce while held in the hand.

Men! What is it with guys and prying things with tools not meant to be pry bars? ROFL! ;)

How many knife tips have you broken trying to pry something with it? I'm with BlueFlint - shoot the lock then pry the pieces with the hawk!

I've got a cheap lock that I'm sure the hawk could pry apart and kill and we all saw what happened in the Hawk vs. Masterlock Showdown. :D

I don't plan on using it as a prybar - just trying to determine what level of "pull" would make the head "pop off" / loosen - or in a scenario where the only tool I had was the Tac VT.

I've had a pretty good run out of my Cold Steel version (am I allowed to admit that?:) ) so I can only expect the Tac VT from ATC to be much stronger built and backed by ATC.

Thanks for the replies - would love to know the results of the machine pull test Andy mentioned!

Comparing a Cold Steel Vietnam hawk to an ATC Vietnam Tactical is like comparing a used wrangler to a new hummer.

You will be in shock if you decide to get the ATC LaGana approved Vietnam Tactical. Your head will spin :D

Blueflinthawk is right. I think I still have the crap version(coldsteel) vietnam hawk. Put the two side by side and look at them. The ATC hawk was made to be used. The cold steel is a sorry excuse for a tomahawk. I'm glad they quit making it. The taiwan peace of crap. The thing that really makes me laugh is the handle of the coldsteel hawk. It's painted narrow and hard hold on to. No grip!

No one makes the vietnam hawk right anyway, but ATC. Why? Peter Lagana. The man that made the hawk in the first place. I received in the mail the stupid BUDK catalog the other day ( I wish they would loose my address) And they sell a $26.00 wanna be vietnam hawk. I find it insulting that they even sell the crap thing. I'm sure there are some of you that get the dreaded catalog also. What a waste of trees that thing is.

The thing that really floors me is if someone would be stupid enough to buy it. What do you get? Nothing. ATC stands behind their hawks. When buying from ATC you get quality, quality, quality. If there is one thing I hate it's wall hangers. Stupid junk made to hang on the wall.

Sorry all. I just hate the fact that all these crap hawk makers are saying authentic vietnam hawks. AUTHENTIC! AUTHENTIC MY ASS! In fact right now As soon as I find that crap of a wanna be hawk that I think I still have I'm going to introduce it to the REAL VIETNAM HAWK! Get ready you peace of crap your time is up!

Suzanne( northstar) better send more meds! All wanna be hawks be ware. Your time is UP!

LOL - bear - I don't think I have enough meds for you! ;) Work out your frustrations beating up the other hawks and your Next Gen will be there SOON!!!!!

Suzanne! Your right! I'm way past medication! PLAY TIME IS OVER! NO MORE MR. NICE HAWK! ALL YOU WANNA BE HAWKS, YOU CAN RUN BUT YOU CAN'T HIDE! THE VIETNAM TACS COMING! THE NEXT GENERATION RANGERS COMING! AND HELL'S COMING WITH THEM! Lets make tooth picks and scrap iron! DEATH to crap taiwan wanna be tomahawks!

I just had a great idea. Why not take the other wannabe hawks, smash them to bits with your atc hawk and post the pics on this forum? Kinda mean but if your company produces crap, you deserve the awful truth on display. and the bud k catalog doesnt even make good wipe.

It sounds like the difference between an ATC Tac VT and a "copy" hawk is like night and day... it looks like I'll have to get one (actually I am planning to be a dealer for all the kiwis down here!) and see for myself.

I'd have to admit that I am a little doubtful even tho I've heard so many good things about performance and handling... just sounds too good to be true and I hate to be disappointed! In saying that, my CS version (which I had reground for more taper) is a decent bang for the buck (to me) but not something that I would really depend on if things got nasty.

OK - time to start saving some $$$$

Thanks all for your input!

Tac VT... Tac Vietnam Tactical? lol I get it... seems a little odd and redundant. Tac Vietnam Tactical! Hooray :D I still prefer VN Tac :p
