Hey guys, my wife just gave my a Cranberry Salsa for Valentine's Day! I love my wife!!
But this knife has a problem. Or should I say, "had" a problem. I don't know if I can describe this properly, but you know on the compression lock, where the traction grooves are? Well on mine, when they cut out the traction grooves, they didn't go back and smooth out the side of them. Basically, the part of the lock where the metal was removed for the grooves cut out but left sticking out the side. If you opened the knife and looked through the knife from top to bottom, instead of just seeing the flat metal of the compression lock, you would see little spikes of metal sticking out the side. Well, these little spikes were sharp enought that they were cutting into my thumb when I would go to push the lock over to close it as well as catching and tearing my jeans pocket when I would pull the knife out. No problem right? Not for someone who owns a dremel tool!
So out came the dremel and I carefully (on the lowest speed) ground those little spikes down. That part worked out perfect, but (there's allways a "but" isn't there?) as carefull as I was, I still managed to barely knick a corner of one scale. Now I have a little tiny, shiny, silver spot on my red Salsa! Is there anyway that anyone knows of to re-anodize that one scale? Can Spyderco do that, or is that out of reach since the knife is made in Taiwan? I don't expect it to covered under warranty or anything since I did it myself. I guess I should of just sent the knife in to have Spyderco fix the burrs on the lock, but I wanted to wear it when I take my wife out tonight for dinner, and those burrs would have torn up my dress slacks pretty good. If the scale can't be re-andodized, is there any danger of the the color flaking off? I don't think so, knowing what little I know of anodizing, but I thought I would ask anyway. If this can't be done, does anyone know of any kind of paint I could use to touch up this spot that would stick to aluminum? Its really not that big of a spot, more like a speck, but it still bugs me ya know? :grumpy:
Not to change the subject too much, but does anyone know what the lock is rated at on the Salsa? With the compression lock, and the hard aluminum scales, I would think it would be rated higher than my beloved Delica. I was wondering, because with the beautifull colors, the shorter blade, and the salsa "pepper" on the side, I would think that this would be a great knife to have on you if the @#$% hits the fan. Especially if you ended up in court later defending your actions. "Why no, judge, I just carry my innocent-looking little Salsa for regular cutting chores, the guy who tried to mug me is the one carring the big "Death Dealer-Close Quarters Combat" knife." Plus the way the handle of the Salsa is made it just locks itself into your hand. I would think this knife would be almost perfect for MBC. Also, if someone wanted to practice with the Salsa, all they would have to do is grind down the blade on a Cranberry one to have a trainer. Although I don't know if I could do that to such a beautifull knife!
Thanks,
Flinx
PS: Just to be clear on one point, I'm not trying to flame Spyderco on their quality control or anything. People make mistakes and I'm sure that this one just slipped through. This is by no means my first Spyderco, I have 22 Spydercos in my collection!
Almost a quarter of which were given to me by my wife!
