Can you re-grind a knife from a traditional "v" edge to a single bevel? any advice?

I just got a new Green River Hunter and the edge is already ground to a "v" but I really like the edge on my Mora and I would like to do the same to the GR without trashing the blade. Does anyone have any advice?

I do a lot of sharpening on a 1 inch vertical belt sander, especially when an older, beat up knife is in really bad shape. Sometimes, if they're bad enough, I'll just grind them down to flat and start a whole new angle from scratch. You could try that. If the original grind on the GR is only about 1/32 or 1/16 of an inch, then that's all the material you would lose. Depending on the knife, that may not affect the original shape and appearance too much and might work.

I would need to see pics to know for sure if what I'm proposing would work or not. There are also other members here who are more qualified than myself, but the method has worked for me many times when I want a whole new edge on a knife.

Good luck,
Jon

If you go from a flat grind to a scandi, you're going to lose a bunch of width off of the blade. Not to mention losing cutting ability, because you're increasing the steepness of the grind.

I'm new to the forums and I've found a lot of the answers that my dad or others can't give me throughout this site, thanks all!

I reground my Buck folder flat to the platen on my 1" belt sander. This removed the hollow grind, replaced it with a flat grind, and I took it to a Mora style grind, except it was 3/4 of the width of the blade, instead of 1/3 like a Mora. I then applied a 12 degree/side final edge. Its ugly as mud though.
