I got a Canon Powershot A40 from Best Buy for ~$250. Like you, I had intended to stay at the $200 pricepoint but, after looking at many of the camera's and reading reviews, I found the extra $50 was very well spent to step up to the Canon quality.

It has great optics and outperforms many camera's with 1 or 2 million additional pixels. The sub-$200 camera's work just fine for small pictures but, blowing them up on photographic paper, they just don't cut it. The Canon with it's superior optics will blow up to a 5x7 with good photographic quality. The other benefit to Canon Powershot A40, is that is uses common memory that is very cheap compared to some other memory formats.

The Canon Powershot A40 will not win the smallest camera prize, or most gadgets on a camera award but, it's photo quality is the best in class and it's size and shape are very easy to use and hold on to.

Highly recommended for casual family use.

I second Sid's recommendation for the Canon A40.
It has all the right stuff that most folk's will
need and a few toys (lenes & such) for the advanced
crowd to play with.

And the A40 also has the most important feature of
all.........it uses AA batteries.

I use rechargeables when I can, but if they go flat
I carry AA spares too. I've been burned big time
by photography equipment that uses special batteries and will NOT consider
any now that use them

So look around mate. There are some really good
cameras in the 2>3 pixel range just watch the batteries.

And if your budget's tighter, you can get the Canon A10. I have one, and its by no means a bad camera. Less features than the A40, lower resolution than the A20, but still a great camera all around. I got mine for about $150 I think.

I have an Olympus C2040Z, and it's a good camera. Only gripes I have are its bulk/odd shape and the sometimes slow between-pictures time. I've taken a ton of pictures with it, though, under a wide variety of circumstances. Email me at mustanger92@hotmail.com if you want a couple sample pics. :)

We got my mom a Minolta Dimage 7 last year for christmas, and I must say this thing is really very nice. It is the most inexpensive camera of its pixel size(sorry can't remeber what it is :)) that has an OPTICAL ZOOM. Do not rely on digital zooming for your zooming needs, it just "blows up" the image reducing the quality of the shot. optical zoom is normal zoom like where the lens actually moves and magnifies the picture.

We also got her a nice color printer and some photopaper, and we havn't been to a picture developer since. I wish I had some of the pics we took of flowers and storms on this computer but I don't, so i shall have to show you a picture of a cathedral from our trip to san fran(shot from 35 MPH trolley zooming over hills) and a picture of my mom's pond.

Warning: large images, modem users beware.

We've been having a few very small problem with the button on it however, as when we were on the beach in northern california, the camera was dropped and some sand seems to have worked its way down into the button jamming it every once in awhile. This is totally our fault, not the cameras. I challenge you to find a camera that is sand-friendly :D

thats the page that i used to pick out the minolta dimage. they said it had slight color issues but was an overall good buy.

My untrained eye hasn't been able to pick out any color issues.
