Can you recommend me a firesteel?

Is there any difference in quality in firesteels? I'm talking about those rods you strike with a piece of metal to make sparks. I guess if it costs 0,85 dollars it's crap, but I don't know.

Is a firesteel from Mora a good choice? Any other brands?

the smaller ones like the LMF scout are good for EDC IMHO. every day carry doesn't mean everyday use. if you were going to use one every day, I'd go for bigger then. I ordered a couple random cheapies off the bay recently, so I'll let everyone know how they work out when I get them.

You can't go wrong with the Light My Fire steels, either the Army (good for 10,000+ strikes, according to the packet, I've never worn one out) or the smaller Scout as already mentioned.

Don't knock the edc option. I recently came across a nice smaller size LMF that fits easily on my keychain. I've been surprised how often it gets used.

Even the cheap ones seem to do the job for me like couglans. The light my fire or Swedish Army models seem to have longer lasting sparks. They are relatively cheap buy a few of the ones recommended and stash a few in various packs, sheaths, etc.

Another vote here for firesteel.com. Gobspark is one of their models, Armageddon is another. They throw quite a bit of sparks. They also have quite a few options. You can get a blank rod; a rod with just a hole drilled, one with a lanyard, a handle, etc.; and they offer different lengths and thicknesses.

I will have to say, however, that my old Light My Fire worked pretty well too. The Armageddon has lasted longer, but it is also thicker.

Both seem like they should work for EDC. My real estate lawyer day-job doesn't often call for a fire steel, so I only carry it when roaming about in the wilderness, and usually in a loop on a sheath. Can't imagine it wouldn't fit comfortably in a pocket though.
