can you sharpen a SAK saw blade?

There's been a lot of talk recently about the usefulness of the SAK models with saw blades. So, I found my old one from Boy Scout days and discovered that the saw blade was pretty dull from all the sawing I must have done way back when. In fact, there was still 15 year old wood lodged in a few of the teeth! Does anyone know if this can be sharpened? Can it send it back to Victorinox? Can the blade itself be replaced via user disassembly of the knife?

I took a look at the saw blade on my knife. It looks like the sharpening job could be done easily with a feather edge file. feather edge files are files used to sharpen Japanese saws. You can get one from www.japanwoodworker.com www.leevalley.com and probably a bunch of other places. Just lock the saw blade into a vise, hold your angle steady and file away! It would probably take only 2 or 3 swipes per tooth side to sharpen it. This, of course, is going from the sawtooth pattern on my SAK! I don't know what the sawteeth are like on a 15 year old SAK. Mine have 2 bevels on the inside, and the "outside" is flat, of course. A bunch of pointy trangular teeth they are!

Be careful sending knives with any history attached back to the maker. I sent in a Weneger SAK that a scale had fallen off of. I included a letter about how I had bought the knife for my wife on our honeymoon and she had carried it daily for 7 years and to please repair it not replace it. They sent a new knife. I would not send my old scout knife in, as you might not get it back. Your milaeage may vary.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I prefer to try sharpening knives myself first before sending them away, and I'm a little wary of losing this particular knife, so I think I'm going to try finding one of those files. But, I looked on both sites but I couldn't seem to find a feather edge file. Is it known by any other name?

Thanks again.
