Can you strop with a leather belt?

Hey, I don't want to but a strop, and I don't have any extra leather laying around to make one. Just wondering if you could strop on the back of a belt with some yellow homing compound?

I paid for a fancy strop with compound. Still use an old belt from time to time when I forgot it or can't find it for some reason. Still works pretty damn well.

I use an old belt along with some $3.00 green polishing compound (wax-like stick, should last me about 200 years) I bought at Lowe's.

Yup, I use an old belt with metal polish, which gives a polished edge that is protected as well.

You can strop with the cardboard back of a writing pad.

yep, and i use the inner side (rough side) because it becomes smoother with use, unlike the outer side which tends to crack.
