Can you tell how a knife has been sharpened?

When I look at an edge I can almost guess for sure how it was sharpened. Or finished. I have trouble with some though. Factory edge and diamond hones are the easiest for me. I have trouble with stones and ceramic. They look the same to me. A power buff is easy but a strop fooled me one time. I don't see that many stropped knives. Knives sharpened with steels make me cringe. How about you? Can you tell how a knife has been sharpened?

David I've been sharpening blades for about 40 years. I strop all of my knives and if I am doing a blade by hand I will use a porcelain hone used to sharpen scalpel blades and then strop the blade. Sharp - like hair falling off if iteven gets near. Found the porcelain hone at a flea market about 14 years ago and haven't been able to find another.
