Can you tell me about my custom engraved Spyderco Native?

Hey everyone!

I'm new to the forum, but a long time knife enthusiast. I've just recently gotten into collecting quality knives (past 2 yrs or so) because now I can actually afford to save up for some. Spyderco is definitely my favorite knife maker! Several years ago I purchased this custom engraved Spyderco Native: http://www.flickr.com/photos/95900527@N03/sets/72157633588534385/ I really don't know too much about it. I'm curious as to what year this knife was made, what it could be worth, and any other information anyone is willing to share on it. I'd like to know if I should keep this in the collection, or sell/trade it for another knife I really want.

Thanks,

Mark

Interesting, I always thought that the Native was only ever made in Golden. That one was stamped Seki City.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing... I can't wait to find out all the details about it!

OK I stand corrected. That is a Native 2. Found this video that shows the different models:

Native was always made in Golden. Native 2 (SS), Native3 (VG10, 3D, wire clip, bigger swedge), and Native4 (FFG blade, CF scales, riveted construction) were made in Seki.

Would you have idea of what this Native might be worth? I'm trying to decide if I should keep it in the collection or sell/trade for something else. I'd love a Spyderfly or Szabofly.

The Native II was probably the least popular version of the Native and the part serrated AUS-10 Native II was the most common version of that model, having been produced from 1998 to 2007, so collector interest would be minimal. MSRP was roughly $100 in 2007, so street price new would have been in the $60-$70 range. Not sure what they're currrently bringing on the secondary market. How much value engraving, or any other form of aftermarket embellishment or customization, adds to or detracts from the value of a knife is impossible to say. As an example, the orientation of the goose on your Native seems wrong to me. On a knife, animals are usually portrayed "right side up" when the knife is open and held normally in the hand. So, to me, it would reduce, rather than add to, the knife's value. Even in the best of cases, you are limiting your potential buyer pool to those who find the customization attractive.

Thanks so much for the information, I really appreciate it. I'm happy to hold on to the knife, I've kind of grown attached to it anyway :)

MFitz:Thanks for asking since I probably would have never seen KrisOK's really neat video for which I also thank KrisOK.

Asking item values is forbidden without a paid membership. Your newish, just something to look for in the future.

Thanks, I didn't realize it was forbidden & I did receive a warning. I had no idea I needed to pay money to ask certain questions, but I guess rules are rules. Now I know.
