Hello all, I have recently acquired a Busse CG Satin Jack knife from an awesome guy, David Brown. You may also notice in the picture the Kydex sheath that was made by him for it as well. Flawless! :) Awesome job!
Just curious as to what the blade steel is & what she is worth....should I use her or put her aside for a while...blah, blah, blah. What year was it made, if you can tell. How well will the black coating last? Does it scratch/rub off easy?

This is my first Busse knife & I am just looking to learn more about it. Man is it nice! Looks like his won't be my last either :D

Well all that you can tell me about it is always appreciated.

i believe the blade is ats-31, about one hundred thousand of these were made for a promotional give away last year, hence the cheaper steel used.
the issue value was a steal at 69.95, i bought a few for my kids to use as dandelion diggers, etc.
if you want to keep it looking new keep the finish out of water as this series had a water soluble finish mostly for show. the infi knives all have the johnny blue finish that is impervious to the most foul breath.
i have been and could be wrong about the model that you show but i do know david bought a few dozen from me last year to take to the tucson knife and armadillo show.
if you want you could ship it to me and i'll do an appraisal and quickly return the knife back to you with the written appraisal and professional picture album.
nice score on your first busse

Darn...I was hoping that it was the INFIN steel. But I will definately consider your offer. If that is all that it is worth  :grumpy: then I am not that happy about it anymore, but we'll see. I really appreciate your offer to check it out. If I cannot get much more info about it, then perhaps I will ship her out to you.

So what is the ats-31 steel like?

Pay no attention to the man in the black and white striped fur.... :p

The Satin Jack retailed for $227 with black micarta handles, $262 for the snakeskin model.

It was made up thru last year.

One tough blade. Good size for field.

Is yours 1/4" or 3/16"??? Kinda looks like 3/16".

While the 1/4" version is more desireable by some, the 3/16 is one great knife.

The steel is INFI. That is the only steel that model was marketed in.

Good first Busse, like Stinky said.

Hope this helps.

ok, ok....

on a second look i can see that you probably didn't get one of davids cheap knock offs.

sometimes i make small mistakes

i'll pay shipping both ways and still give your busse a "confirmation of authenticity" diploma.

nice score on the satin jack and leatherman sheath

Stinker :D

I've recently seen the 3/16" go for about $250.00 and the more collectable 1/4" going from $275.00 to $350.00 range for a mint one.

It is in pristine condition & it is the 3/16" version.

Thank you all for the info. I never really knew anything about Busse knives before & I am trying to learn about them now.
Never really knew there were so many :)

Is the snap on the nylon sheath supposed to hold the knife in the sheath or is it there for "decoration"? When you snap the snap over the handle of the knife, it doesn't hold it, you can still pull the knife out of the holster. Is this normal?

So, how does the black coating hold up? Since he made me a Kydex sheath for it, I would like to use it, but I don't want to risk damaging the finish.

Thank you all! :D

You got Punked by Skunk :D
You lucky Bastid I want a 1/4" CGSJ I can taste the INFINI now and the smell ohhhhhh the smell

the version that you show is kind of loose on the ones that i have. the last models had a snap on an adjustable cord so that you could wrap it around the handle any way you wanted it.

the finish is very hard and will smooth out with use, you will first see the smoothing at the "sweet spot" where you would chop or do most of your cutting.

using your knife in kydex will make some wear marks on it where the material is tight.

on my users i have two sheaths, i use kydex for whitewater rafting, glove boxes, camp boxes and to tie to my 4 wheeler. i use leather for belt carry while hunting, treking and such as i find it quieter.

the satin jack of old is destined to be a great collector busse either new or used. you will never loose the value of your busse.

unless you ship it to me ;)

ps: (plus a great post builder) you can never have to many satin jacks

OMFG! Droooooooooooooooooooooool!

Si me gusta!

Thank you for all of your info. I would like to use the knfie..I mean, that's what I bought it for, but if it was someting special then I didn't want to harm it in any way.

I guess if the finish ever did wear off & looked silly, I could always take the easy off oven cleaner to it to finish the job ;)

Thanks all!

i think most people will look at it like an experienced old friend, kind

of like when you pick up an old 1911 or peacemaker colt with 50% of the

bluing gone. and what's even better is after you get the first couple of

scrapes on it, you can really use it and feel good

Wow
I am glad someone helped you out I forgot to tell you all the good stuff about these wonderful knives, if you have any more questions please feel free to e-mail me.

As far as using or keeping I would say use it & get another for keeping maybe one of the rarer Urban camo ones Idaho Stinko is blowing out at a bargin.

Like I warned you though this will not be your last one. Look at the Badger 3 for a shorter Satin Jack or a Active Duty for that perfect EDC !!!!! :D

Oh and then there are the Swamp Rats...............................

sixfeetdeep,

Watch out for skunks, especially ones with a big smile on their face, like the one in this thread! ;) :D

Seriously, your SJ is a nice knife! The micarta used on yours is not very common; it was originally used on the Desert Air Rescue & Desert Satin Jack models. Due to the type of micarta, I would say your SJ was made in 2003. That's a nice looking kydex sheath too.

With the exception of some apprentice blades, all Busse knives since the late 1990's or so have been made from INFI. The blade coating will get smooth somewhat easily with use, but seems to hold up well after the initial smoothing (how well depends of course on how abrasive the material is you are cutting). Kydex sheaths can leave marks on the blade coating, so if you want to keep it in pristine condition, store your SJ in something soft that will not scratch the finish.

Regarding the factory nylon sheath, I had the same problem with a 1/4" SJ. Contact the Busse factory at customerservice@bussecombat.com, or call them at (419) 923-6471, to get shipping info to return the sheath, and they will send you a sheath that fits (be sure to let them know your knife is the 3/16" model). At least some of the 3/16" SJ's came with a different style sheath that has a cord to wrap around the handle instead of the nylon loop with a snap; apparently both sheath types were used though. The correct sheath should hold the knife securely.

Congratulations on your first Busse!

I'm not sure if there are any more sheaths available from the shop.

But, ya never know what Shag and Amy can cook up for ya!!!!

I have a buddy who is outstanding with sharpening knives. Well, I went to his place yesterday & had him properly do 14 of my knives including this Satin Jack. While it was sharp before, it is like a razor now :D ...now I am very happy!
I had seen a post by Eric with his set of 4 rare Busse Zero Tolerance knives.......man, I really like the Natural Outlaw.......if his price is right....then maybe I 'll have to get just one more....well, you can't have just one....or is that dozen ;)
