Can you use an Ultra Violet LED to purify/make safe drinking water?

I have several UV Lights in a few different wave lengths can any UV light be used to make water safe?

If someone knows the wave length and the duration needed to kill bacteria I'd appreciate any help as I'm sure anyone with a UV Light would also.

Thanx

UV-C - Shortwave UV - 253.7nm wavelength is used for air and water purification. UV-C is not the more common long wave "black light" UV-A bulbs, but are special generally restricted scientific bulbs.

When the bulb is bright enough to kill germs it can cause permanent eye damage, so be careful.

The Philips TUV4T5 is actually a small florsecent lightbulb.

Can you use a single LED? Yeah... but it's gonna be very sloooooooooooowwwww.

I have an Inova 5 UV light and I was thinkin' of some ind of system where the water would pass through a particulate filter of some kind to get rid of suspended sediment and the dissolved solids, then pass in front of a UV LED to kill any living bacteria.

Sounds like the timeframe needed to kill bacteria wouldn't make a UV LED efficient.

Any portable/pacable RO systems out the for personal water cosumption or would my needs be better served by one of the packable purification straws?

mine runs through a 2 micron taste and oder filter then through the UV.

I believe the only way to get out dissolved solids is by Reverse osmosis.

At least from what i have looked into.
