I am traveling through canada in a few weeks will I have any trouble with non-double edged fixed blades going across the border? Mind you they're not going to be on me just in my duffel. Thanks.

I would think you should be okay as long as none of them are "scary fighting" kinds of knives. If you're just taking some hunting knives across, should be no problem. If you would like more answers, try posting in the Canadian sub-forum. Most folks there are happy to help. :)

Fixed blades are NOT illegal in Canada, as long as they're not used in a crime.

If you use a knife for a crime, it's a weapon, if you use it as a tool, it's a tool. When someone stops you and asks why you have a knife on you, you tell them what? It's a tool, I use it to cut things. Carrying it for self defense is not allowed, so only carry it to use as a tool.

Folder laws are a little sticky, but fixed blades are really easy.

Thanks, I'm just driving through Canada on the way to alaska. They won't ever be out except crossing the border.

Knife laws are just a heap of beaurocratic trash and I will explain a point here (no pun intended). For example in Canada you are not allowed to carry or own automatic knives and many one hand openers. :grumpy: However, nothing is written in the rules about box cutters. Many box cutters like the Fuller Auto-Loc is a one hand automatic. The knife blade simply extends with the push of your thumb and the blade is locked securely inplace. These knives are everywhere, and they cut like the devil. I might be more inclined to feel more fear if I were confroted by an assailant with a large box cutter than a regular knife. The blades are razor sharp and their thin blade could certainly yield a fatal slice. Box cutter = Throat cutter:D . This is my arguement to just dump all the knife laws, but I guess the lawyers and judges would lose business and be out of a job:D :D .

bufford, thanks for the reply. Are there special rules for military and law enforcement in canada? I'm going to be driving up through washington state next week and I already believe I'll spend at least 10 hours at the border between rifles, dog, equipment. Maybe not, last time they took it easy on me, not sure if it was because I was military or not......

Beefangusbeef. I am not sure, but I believe the federal government would not recognize international military & police officers. They are more likely to treat you like any other visitor. With that said it would be better to check out the regulations in the govenment of canada website. Do a google search on this. However, there is no problems bringing in sheath knives double edged or not, and regular folders (no automatics). I do know that they will ask you to register your long guns and they charge a fee for this and it is very unpopular with the visitors. Handguns, pepper spray, stun guns, automatic knives, brass knuckles, cane swords will cause problems at the boarder.

I have just been checking the knife laws here in Canada since I am planning to purchase a few online to add to my collection. To clarify the law a little for you, switchblades and other spring loaded folding knives are illegal in Canada as well as knives that open by gravity(butterfly knives). Knives that open with one hand are totally and 100% legal. Just don't tell anyone that it's for self defense if they ask you what you have it for. Opening boxes, hunting purposes or just cleaning your fingernails is a much better answer.
