Anyone know what the laws are in Canada regarding both folders, and fixed blades? I'v been trying to figure them out but im not getting any clear answers.

thanks. Brad

Hey from what I know there is now law for the length of a fixed blade. As for folders they can not be assisted openers. This means anything with a spring or even with the help of gravity.

as long as its not a weapon its legal, now since intent makes a knife a weapon theres a fine line of whats legal and whats not, theres no imidiate knife size laws, but it might be harder to convince the officer your busse or strider 10'' tiger stripped tanto is for utility then a buck 110.

if a cop ever asks u if u have any weapons, say no i have a utility knife. also, if they ask u why u have a knife, never, NEVER say its for self defence, cuz to them that screams weapon. always say its for utility pourposes.

as mentioned above, autos are banned, so are balisongs and double edged knives.

First, you should have look on http://www.justice.gc.ca/en/

To make it short: autos, balis, everything that flicks open and push-daggers are prohibited.

AO'S ARE LEGAL! since the device to release the blade is not on the handle. In other word, they forgot to ban AO's. So if you carry one, don't open it in public if you don't NEED to. => sheeples don't make any distinction between autos and AO's.

That was the easy part.

Now, the federals tell what is prohibited in all the country, BUT there still are city laws about lenght, etc. For me, it was a pain in the a$$ to find... Province police, town police...daaaa

In my town, the law is simple, you need a professionnal reason to carry a knife or it's illegal.

Chek with your city Police department. Or ask in the Canadian Connection Forum if people live near you ank know the laws.

We ship AO's to Canada regularly.

You can buy Kershaw AO in Canada's stores. I don't know why the owner of True North Knife listed some of his assisted opening knives by other makers as "for US only".

Incidentally, I heard about a guy who once had a sheathed bowie knife in one of his hands and cops around him saw it but said nothing about it. His home nearly got broken into. He was at home at that time and so he was trying to chase down that guy with his neighbour..yes...with a big bowie knife in one of his hands...late at night. Cops came and questioned about the incident outside his place. But no question about the big knife.

Double-edged knives are perfectly legal, and an assisted open knife is not prohibited by the letter of the law.

Technically speaking, all fixed blades, regardless of length and design are perfectly legal to carry, concealed or not. That's not to say a Busse AK-47 would be a good EDC on the streets of Toronto, but it would be legal.

As far as folders go, things are a little more tricky. If you can open the knife by inertial opening or "wrist flick", it is technically illegal to posess, let alone carry. Be reasonable, use common sense and above all, remember that your knife is not a weapon.

*Edit* I forgot to mention that push daggers are most definitely illegal.
