I am interested in one of these. I know next to nothing about them, and I need all advice.

Best grind?
Best size for practicality?
Thickness?
Makers?
Specific design quirks and models to avoid or really consider?

Traditional uses such as camp use, cleaning game, etc will be my use.

The large skinner by gorhman really caught my eye.

Thanks

(top to bottom) DH Russell #4 Survival in carbon (5.5" blade), Russell Grohmann #1 in carbon with flat grind and micarta scales (4") and a R Murphy Skinner in carbon (4"). The Russell Grohmann knives can be had in stainless as well.

The R Murphy can be had for around 40 bucks.

Like all three but would buy the flat ground version if I was starting over but that Murphy is a fine knife as well. On the other hand that big #4 is awesome too! :D

Does one feel better in hand or work better over another?

I tend to like bigger blades, but I wonder if this is a case where that would be a problem

I like the top one, but I thought I saw it in a full flat grind as well.

The #4 is great in your hand but has a more blade heavy feel. Mine is an older DH Russell stamped knife. The Orig #1 feels like an extension of your hand, very light and responsive!

I've done light cutting with all these and the #1 is effortless in use. The #4 is described as a survival knife and I think it would be a great one. I bet the flat grind version would be a perfect all around camp knife.

Grohman makes the only authentic one, D.H. Russell Canadian Belt Knife. Check out their website. If you are patient, you can buy one cheaper off the seconds page when one shows up.

Thanks Brownshoe. I really like a couple of those. The 100, #1 and the #4. The other option was a custom with a slightly different grind and shape that I have seen.
