Canadian EDC knife question, what should I do?

Hey there, I want to start carrying a good knife with me as a tool and for self defense. I am kinda paranoid that something bad will happen to me in the futur that I will need a knife, a good knife. I already carry a cheap 3inch Swiss armie knife with me that I use almost everyday. I want to carry a better knife so I bought myself a 4-5inch foldable GOOD knife. I am scared to carry it because it can be mistaken as a weapon and if I ever get stopped by the police I will be doomed. What should I do? Carry the 3 or 5inch? Any tips for a Canadian edc and laws I should follow?

Thanks,
Matty

I'm not an expert in Canadian law and I'm hoping someone with more direct knowledge with comment soon, but over the years the impression I get is that for non-automatic, conventional knives, it's a matter of intent rather than size. Intent is what police assembled from multiple variables: What you say, what you were doing when caught, why you were caught, the design of the knife, if you have a record, if your non-weapon purpose for the knife is plausible etc. Saying you have a knife for self-defense is effectively shooting yourself in the foot.

I will say I have a skeptical view of carrying a knife for self-defense. I advise you to read this article: http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/knifelies.html

You are good to go here with something like a Buck 110 on your belt with the exception of certain cities, Calgary comes to mind that has a knife by law. Otherwise be discrete, act normal and do not ever mention to an officer that the knife is also for self defense. In rural areas I commonly carry a fixed blade and get few looks, even when paying for gas. Canada is quite knife friendly. Avoid automatics, gravity knives, throwing stars and butterfly knives.
