Arrived today, no problems through Canada Customs. I guess there is no issue with the SOG assisted technology.

First impressions of Flash II Black TiNi:

Overall size is smaller than I expected, but a unexpected delight as an EDC now. Graphic finish and the graduated diamond gripping surface on handle is perfect, and I really like it. Handle sides fit perfectly together, with flat black inset Trox screws. I'll not to sure yet on the black TiNI finish on blade presently, but it does contrast well with handle. The deep, flat and light-in-weight carry in pocket is great. Can't see any portion of handle. Clip as PistolPete said is quite firm, with slight effort needed to get it out of pocket.

Like the SOG square in their insert on both sides of handle. High quality looking knife.

Opening the knife is fine! Snaps open with a wrist flick or a short push on thumb stud, then SOG assisted technology takes over. For closing, after pulling back on the piston lock, the blade moves easily for the first 90 degrees and then something in handle firmly grips the blade for the last 90 degrees until snap closure.

I'm having a little difficulty with safety, seems to only open halfway sometimes.

To open knife you have to slide your thumb back on handle to release safety, and then move forward to engage thumb stud, or to prepare to flick wrist. I find the base of the clip contacts the fleshy part of hand when holding knife, just not used to it yet.

This is my first folder with a tip up carry also, so it feels a bit different in pocket.

Overall, wonderful knife, absolutely great finish, with fine opening action. Size is great for medium to small hands. I think safety should be redesigned to be placed near front of knife next to pivot pin, so thumb movement is reduced, which would aid in opening speed.

I really like this knife, SOG. Great design. Very happy!

Too bad the patent hasn't issued yet, so I could see the patent no. displayed on the blade. Mine has patent pending labelling.

Happy Thanksgiving, Todd (a.k.a. Sgt. Rock with solid grey hair)

Hi Infotree,

Thanks for your review of our TiNi Aluminum Flash II. I've been trying to wear mine out ever since I got it over a month ago!

Here's a picture of couple of mine that I've posted elsewhere (here and here):

I'd like to understand this a bit more. If you could explain it a bit for me either here, via email, or give me a call at 425.771.6230, ext. 228, I'd appreciate it.

Enjoy your knife and let us know more later, after you've had a chance to use it more! :)

After I spoke to Ron this morning, I thought I would clarify the issue with the safety movement to the rest of the forum readers.

On my Flash II, if you move the safety with the fleshy part of your thumb, occassionly it will stop midway, and then a firmer push is needed to move safety to fully open position.

If you move the safety with your thumbnail, which is a more lateral movement, the safety easily moves to the fully open position.

No problems are encountered when moving the safety to the locking position with either your nail or fleshy part of your thumb.

My guess in this matter is moving the safety with the fleshy part of thumb also imparts a downward force in addition to the lateral movement, and something in the safety mechanism inside handle is rubbing or engaging some sort of protrusion within handle.

Maybe a SOG designer could clarify?

Also I meant in my previous post that the graphite finish on the aluminum handle (not graphic) is superb.

The forward top of the handle also has a series of gripping ridges which gradually slope upward to assist in stabilizing your thumb for using knife.

I don't know know which is more fun now, opening my SOG TiNi Powerlock, Switch Plier, or this Flash II! My knuckles are becoming bruised with Powerlock..........

That's what it's all about!!! :D You can't stop, can you? We put an addictive agent in these products!

Great talking with you earlier and I hope I answered your questions well.

Take care.

Todd

That is the one thing I would add to my Flash 1... the same ridges on the bottom of the spine, near the clip. I find that I slip sometimes trying to pull it out of my pocket. The Zytell handled one has both sets of ridges, the aluminum only 1.
Other than that I love the little Flash. It came razor sharp ;) :D, and has been happily attacking envelopes, boxes, and tape (sometimes without my help!!! :p
It's just the right size to clip to my pocket, without it being sheeple fear inducing. I've had quite a few people comment on how cool it is.:D

Ron, just have Spencer add the ridges... pleeeeease....

I never use the safety on mine...should I be? What would be the point of a knife that opens faster if you need to take an extra step of relesing the safety before you can open it?

The safety is present for protection against accidental knife opening and ensuing injury (ouch!). As a personal preference, I have yet to carry my TiNi Aluminum Flash II with the safety engaged. That is a risk I'm willing to take. Carrying it now daily for about 5 weeks, all has been safe here with no accidental discharges. I have personal confidence it will not accidentally open. Your confidence may vary! ;)

Darn, looks like another knife I'll have to consider getting in the new year. With all the positive responses, I really wish I could handle one first.

Haha, Ron, feel free to send one up for trial. If it is able to leave my hands, I'll definitely send it back.

I'll get one right on the way! ;) (You'd better check with "glockman99," who last time I checked has been waiting by his mailbox work weeks, how well I keep my word on these "freebees.")
