Canadian Knife Makers. Where do you get your steel ?

Hello,

Does anyone know of any Canadians online retailers of various steels ? I've looked at Texas Knife Supply and Onlinemetals.com and while they have good prices, the shipping and brokerage fees to Canada can be more expensive than the steel itself. $7.95 for a foot of O1 ends up being more like 30 dollars for me once I've added shipping, duty, brokerage fees, etc.

I'm new to Knife making and I've heard O1 is a good steel to start with, but if anyone has any other recommendations (and places to purchase) I'm all ears. Thanks.

You might want to post this in the Canadian Connection Forum in the Knife Community section here on BF.

Oh yeah, Welcome to Blade Forums.

Hey hey fellow Canuk

Try calling Jeff Diotte at Downie Knife supply. he carrys just about all your knifemaking needs . Jeff is in the process of get a website up and running but you can call him at 519-978-9387. You can try Emailing him if you like at Jeff@stainlessdamascus.com . He is a great guy and his prices are great.
As far as O1 goes it is great steel and will make a good knife.

Agree with J.Wade - Jeff is the guy most of us go to for just about everything we need - he will ship same day, and is always glad to talk about relative merits of any steel. He makes some very nice blades. Closer to home, you might ask Greg Lightfoot (Kiscoty, Al) -pitbull@lightfootknives.com - or Thomas Haslinger (Calgary) - thomas@haslinger-knives.com. Both great guys, and super makers.
You should also check out the Canadian Knifemakers Guild site, there are lots of resources posted there.

Hello Boulderer

I sell a limited selection of steel at this time. Some Damascus, some ATS34 and 440C and I have some O1 in stock and more on the way as we speak - which I hope will arrive next week. I don't have nearly Jeff's selection yet, but let me know what your normal needs are and I'll be sure to include it in my next order if I don't already have it. I'm next door to you in Alberta, so shipping shouldn't be too bad.

By the way, does your name 'boulderer' mean you are a climber? You have granite in BC right? <sigh> I dream of granite - and get crumbling limestone.:(

Welcome to the forum. I spent some time looking for sources when I moved out here, and have found some Starret O-1 in various sizes and lengths from Acklands-Grainger - they sell it for small tooling. They'll order in from other locations if they don't stock it locally. For 440-C and ATS-34, check out House of Tools in Langley. They sell bar and sheet. and also run a heat treat service (stainless only) from their Calgary shop. If you're ever down White Rock way, give me a holler and I'll give you a couple of P&N saw blades I got from a recycler. They're high speed steel with about 4% tungsten and tough to work, but boy do they hold an edge. And the price was right...
