Hello,
I'm wondering a couple of things about the photography of custom knives in Canada. This is a little research to help a friend of mine who recently became unemployed find a way to make a little money on the side. I'll be giving him a couple of knives to photograph and I'll post them here for feedback and critique soon enough.

If you'd be so kind as to share your thoughts regarding this topic, I'd greatly appreciate it.

-who is currently available within Canada who provides professional photographic services to the custom knife community?

-is there much of a market in Canada for these services?

-how much would a maker or dealer be able to spend on quality photography?

-how much would a collector expect to pay for these services, and what would they expect for their money?

I'm very interested in this topic. I like some of my photos but mostly I don't.
Maybe I could send a few to your buddy too Lorien should the ones you send him turn out well.

Stuart

Stu, I totally gapped out that you might be into this:o Sorry bud!
But man, you would REALLY benefit from a professional photographer, not sayin your photos are crappy, just sayin:p:p:p:D

Here's his site so far; www.sprinklingphotos.com.

Hi Murray, thank you for your offer to help. I'll let Ken know how to get ahold of you.
His site doesn't yet have knife content, but what do you think of his photos?
I've set him up with a lot of links to purveyors, pro photographer's sites and info threads here on BF.

I realize now that some of the questions I asked, especially those regarding $, might be best answered in private, so if anyone out there who would prefer to keep things on the DL but still help Ken find out if this type of work is for him, feel free to pm me.

That sounds like a good plan. As is getting some knives in his hands for photos. It's probably going to be difficult to get work for photos without something of a portfolio to show what he can do.

Roger, I'm going to start him off with some 'lorienmades', sees how he likes it and then maybe let him use my collection to build a portfolio to get started.

I will bet that shooting knives has left more than a few accomplished photographers scratching their heads as they do present their own difficult challenges. Don't seem like we see a lot of photographers crossing over into knives.

My older brother is a good photographer but I have never been able to convince him to shoot a knife. Perhaps some day. http://www.ronjonesphotography.com/

Your friend's wood photography is quite nice, I would be interested in seeing his knife images.

Kevin -- your brother is far beyond being good. He is a true Master of the Art. I have passed this site around and suggest anyone should bookmark it and when needing a lift just look as these images. They are all truly outstanding and quite beyond belief. It would be fun to chat with him sometime and see his techniques as to how he creates some of those fine images. I'm sure all who view them will be thankful he has these online for viewing. Thank you for posting the link.

Holy Cow Kevin, your brother is talented.

There's one piece that is so freakily like a sketch for a painting I did about 15 years ago..

Lorien sorry to de-rail your thread. Seeing your friend's beautiful photos and him considering crossing over into knife photography, just made me think of my brother's photography. I've often wondered how he would capture a knife.

Thanks Murray, Jon, Stuart and Bill. Feel free to drop Ronnie a note on his comments page.

Stuart, he is also an accomplished medical DR/surgeon and all the drawings/paintings you see on his site are his work.
It's pretty obvious that he absorbed all the talent in the Jones gene pool and left me without any. :( ;) :D

And a surgeon... wow..
And my comment about my drawing was about universals not suggesting anything else.
His painting is much better than whatever I could've done to represent that particular emotion/experience.
