If you were in the military and got deployed to somewhere in the middle east would you be able to purchase a knife like a otf or a ballisong that would otherwise be illegal in canada? Sorry if this is in the wrong sub-forum!

I am not exactly sure, but one avenue you may look down would be:
Is a Canadian military base considered an extention of Canada and due to that, would it's laws and bylaws stand, or would it rely on local jurisdiction.

Just an idea to persue.

Good Luck and welcome aboard.

A good question for someone ranking above you in your attachment. I don't know any of the legalities within the military but I know a friend of mine bought a prohibited here shotgun when he was in France.

Prior to deployment you'll get several long talking too's about what not to do, to buy, and so. Stuff in the markets like weapons and drugs are tempting to young soldiers but take it to hear that you're there as a representative of Canada and your conduct needs to be acceptable.

Depending on your unit and tasking any non-issue knives could be a cause for trouble.

No idea about Canukistan, US military posts/bases didn't carry automatics. We got issued them though. I obviously can't speak for every installation.

Ask your CO or Sargent.
The military has well enforced regulations (AKA "LAWS") on what is and what is not allowed. Even if the knife (for example, a switchblade) is legal to own and carry where you live, it may not be legal to carry on base or while on deployment. Most modern militaries do not allow switchblades, by the way. I cannot think of a single one that does, off the top of my head.
I know they were a big "no-no" when I was in (US Army) back in the mid 70's.

The problem is not what You can or can not buy whilst abroad - the issue is that many nations warn their soldiers stationed in the sandbox against bringing any such item home and that luggage/gear/duffle bags in many cases WILL be searched. Should You want to bring it back, that is. You may only want to carry in on tour and not bring it back.

No prohibitions on bringing back issued gear, I separated in 2007. People were issued Benchmade auto strykers and 3550s as well as Gerber 06 autos. There were Leatherman and Gerber multi tools as well.

There are rules, Rules, and then RULES. Go with whatever your CO says. too many variables to guess at, and the risks are way more severe if you do things wrong.

I've heard all kinds of stories from former service members about "issued" or "personal" gear that was outside of regulation. In general I think it has to do with cases where someone in command has some personal discretion. That does not mean that gets extended to everyone.

Short answer: you remain subject to the Criminal Code while deployed. Therefore, you can't possess any prohibited weapon unless it was issued to you.

This is basic military law that is covered during BMQ or whatever they call it these days.
