I am looking for a source to get a 2 x 42 grinder to do a 2 x 72 mod. Sears canada doesn't seem to stock the craftsmen. All I can seem to find are 4 x 36 which I have or 1 inch. Any ideas?

The downsides to the 2x42 are still there when converted to 2x72. The only advantage is belt selection. If you order good belts for the 2x42, there is no real advantage. Its still underpowered, and runs too fast. To do a speed conversion on top of the 2x72 conversion will put you close to the price of a basic 2x72 grinder, unless you have the step pulleys and pillow blocks laying around. While single speed, you would have more options such as small wheel, hollow grinding etc. We are really limited in Canada, as the shipping of a grinder is about $200.00. When on a budget, its prohibitive. I think the best way to go in Canada unless you have $3000.00 (2hp variable speed from Canadian Knifemaker) is to get a fab shop to build a KMG clone or the EERF plans, unless you can have the equipment to make your own.

If you're really intent on getting a 2x42, try Amazon. They ship to Canada, and have some 2x42 grinders on there to choose from. You could also get the Grizzly knifemaking grinder for not a whole lot more, although I agree with NickWheeler that if you're really even remotely serious about it, you would be better off getting the real grinder. Why? Because if you like the hobby, you'll end up getting one anyways, which means that whatever you spend now will be wasted.

I am not set on the 42 but it looks like I may need to replace the 4 by 36 I have and a modded 2 by 42 aeems like the best bang for the buck.

If you are at all handy, and can weld, there are some pretty straight forward designs on YouTube. A used motor, some 5/8" keyed shafts and bearings, and a drive wheel will get you close. I got my 2x42 as a gift for my birthday this year. I would have gone straight to 2x72. Ordering a kit from the states is not cost effective because of the shipping. On the other hand, a 2x42 is better than no grinder or a 1x30. For the$250.00 or so for the 2x42 shipped, look around for what you could build. If you don't have any steel or motors, building might be too expensive now.

After all the mods, I think you will come to the conclusion that you spent quite a bit of money on a sub par product. Then wish you bought something else that I was ready to run. Look at the kmg packages. They can be had very cheap for what they are.

I started out with a 4x36 and then went to a kmg 2x72. I learned a huge lesson, that your time is definitely worth more than a few hundred bucks. Put in a couple extra over time shifts and get the right grinder it will save you countless hours in grinding with an under powered grinder. I got my kmg shipped to a address just across the border, for $1800 I got small wheel attachment, flat grinding/slack belt, and 8" wheel, I put a 2hp compressor motor on it with a step pulley. I wish I had gone with this setup first off.

I am gonna have to try that. These shipping prices are killing me. Tried to buy a 5 dollar bolt yesterday, shipping was 22 dollars! For a 12mm bolt. Put it in an envelope and mail it, for crying out loud. I also spent 30 odd on shipping for 2 5 dollar belts because apparently you can't buy 4 x 36 belts above 220 grit in Canada.

Ouch on the shipping. That's the cost of doing business in Canada. If you order a grinder make sure you get everything you need the first time or shipping will just be even more.

When things get shipped on a pallet are they crazy expensive? Freight in the US is fairly cheap considering the size and weight of the items. Maybe you can look into have you items put on a pallet? Just a thought.

Bee grinders start at about $1850.00 for a 1hp single speed. A 2p VFD is about $3000.00. From what I have read they are a top notch grinder, second to none. If I sold my rental last month, I would have bought one.

For reference, a bench model hardness tester was going to be about $400.00 to ship to me. I think its better in Ontario, as the population density results in volume. Out west its crazy sometimes.
