Two weeks ago I spent a few days up in Canada, and I made a new friend while I was there:

I hardly ever see butterflies in WA any more, but they were everywhere up at lake Shuswap. This one apparently liked people, because it landed on the railing right in front of me and allowed me to pick it up. I passed it around to a few other people, then ran it next door to show the ladies my bug wrangling skills.

These pictures were actually taken at the butterfly's request. It started posing, spinning in circles and slowly waving it's wings at the camera.

I tried a few times to catch a second one, but none of the others were brave enough to let me hold them.

Very cool. They used to have a butterfly emporium around here, and I remember going on a field trip there in elementary school. They would have you spit on your finger, and the butterflies would be attracted to the sugar in your saliva and land on you, it was way cool.

Seems the butterflies up here are very docile. My grandmother rented space on her farm to a breeder of them for a time, some very interesting stuff.
I never heard of the spit method you mention I always just held a finger out for them to land on some would come some wouldn't. my daughter seems to have an affinity for it , gets them more often then not.
